I used to think that you had to be at a certain ability level or be able to do certain tricks to call yourself a skateboarder but then I realized I love riding a skateboard and the feeling that it gives me, therefore I am a skateboarder. Despite the fact that my skills on a skateboard don’t involve leaving the ground, I love it and appreciate every type of skateboarding — vert, street, bowls, and longboarding…I don’t care what anyone says, downhill is gnarly! To me, anything that involves going fast on a board with four wheels is better than walking and the bottom line is that it’s FUN – plain and simple. Fun is good. There will always be haters and judgy people trying to define what “real” skateboarding is but if you truly enjoy doing something does it really matter what other people think? NOPE. Except scooters. Those are only acceptable if you are 3 years old. If you are not in diapers, get off your scooter immediately. I do hit up local skateparks in the bay here and there when I have time. This usually means cruising around practicing my kick turns and trying not to die. But some of the most fun I get out of skateboarding is on my Penny board. The MAHFIA office is down a hill from my house so my commute to work is actually one of the highlights of my day. Sometimes I’ll make an excuse to leave the office and grab a snack just so I can get in a quick cruise on my board.
Running this website means a shit ton of computer time so a little sidewalk slashing is the perfect pick me up during a long day of nerding out on my computer. My go to board is the 27″ Nickel. These boards have big, soft wheels that can take on cracks and small rocks and debris that will usually make you eat it on a regular skate. They are surprisingly fast and keep speed really well, even on rough asphalt. They come ungripped but you can add grip tape if you like – helpful for doing tricks but otherwise I don’t think you need it. I like to ride mine ungripped because a) I’m not leaving the ground b) it doesn’t scratch up my clothes and fingers (girl moment). Penny just dropped their newest collection of graphics — the Painted Fade series, check out this rad lil video they made and shop the collection here.
And yes, you can do tricks on Penny boards:
