How-To

Web Site Testing Using a No-Cost, Open-Source Tool

In today's world, we heavily rely on web-based applications and web sites to carry out our work. While these resources are generally very reliable, they can occasionally break down. As developers or administrators of these applications, testing them regularly to ensure they function properly is important. We could test them manually, but that's a tedious and repetitive process with several limitations.

To address these limitations, Jason Huggins, an engineer at Thoughtworks, developed a JavaScript program called the TestRunner to automate web application testing. Later, the program was renamed to Selenium. Using Selenium, you can record, click-by-click, and play back web-based applications and web sites to ensure they perform as expected. Using Selenium, you can interact with links, buttons, text boxes and drop-down menus. You can even enter information in text boxes and perform operations on images. I can do pretty much everything I manually do on a web site using Selenium.

Over the years, others have contributed to the development and maintenance of the program, and industry heavyweights such as Google and Facebook have invested in personnel to extend and Improve the product. Selenium has become so popular it has its own conference, SeleniumConf, which was held in Chicago this year.

Although I am far from a Selenium expert, I have been using it regularly and find it helpful. A couple things I like about Selenium are its ease of use, requiring only a web browser plugin, and its extensibility. I only use it for basic tasks and have not even begun exploring all its features and possibilities.

In this article, I will look at Selenium, how to install and use it and my final thoughts.

What is Selenium?
Selenium is not a single product but a suite that allows you to test web-based applications. The suite comprises Selenium IDE, RC, WebDriver and Grid.

Below is the official description of the Selenium suite of products.

  • Selenium IDE is a record and playback tool for creating automated tests without writing any code. A Chrome or Firefox browser extension allows users to record their interactions with a web site and then replay them to test for errors or bugs.
  • Selenium WebDriver is a tool that automates web applications across browsers and OSes. It provides a programming interface for creating and executing tests in various programming languages like Java, Python and C#. WebDriver uses browser-specific drivers to interact with the web application, making it a powerful tool for automating complex scenarios.
  • Selenium Remote Control (RC) is an older version of Selenium that has now been deprecated in favor of WebDriver. It allowed users to write tests in different programming languages and run them on remote machines. Selenium RC required a server to be started before running tests, which made it slower and less efficient than WebDriver.
  • Selenium Grid is a tool that allows users to run tests in parallel on multiple machines, which can significantly speed up test execution time. It uses a hub-and-node architecture, where the hub acts as a central server that controls the distribution of tests to various nodes. Selenium Grid tests web applications that must be tried on multiple browsers and OSes simultaneously.

Due to its popularity, many languages including Go, Perl, PHP and R have bindings to it. At the same time, all the major languages have frameworks for it.

I have only used the IDE and found it accomplishes everything I need. The rest of this article will focus on it.

Installing Selenium IDE
The Selenium plugin can be used with Chrome or Firefox browsers. I will be using Chrome. I downloaded and installed it without any issues.

I enabled Selenium using the Chrome extensions dialog.

Using Selenium for Basic Web Site Testing
To get a basic feel for using the IDE, I devised a simple test: go to a web site for some basic navigation and pop out a picture on that site.

I brought up the Selenium IDE in a pop-out window by clicking the extension in the web browser taskbar.

This launched the IDE. I was asked if I wanted to start a new project or use an existing one. I started a new project named Se_Project_01.

In the Playback base URL text box, I gave it the name of the web site I wanted to interact with (https://pdxl.com/) and clicked the Start Recording icon (Rec). This brought up the web site and indicated that it was recording. I then went down and clicked on Quick link to Timberline Ski Area Mt. Hood and then clicked a link to a photo on that page. I then stopped the recording and named the test Ski_Test.

A list of commands that were recorded was shown in the IDE.

When I clicked the Run Current Test icon, a new web browser popped up and the commands were run against it. It was that easy to create a test.

On further inspection, I found that the IDE had green check marks to the left of the commands, indicating that the commands had been completed successfully. By clicking the three vertical dots to the right of the commands, I could delete them or perform other functions on them.

The IDE command pane allows you to enter or modify existing commands manually. The IDE also allows you to select if it should use XPath or CSS elements in its testing by selecting the down arrow in the Target text box,

The Command drop-down menu shows the dozens of commands that can be used with Selenium. This includes the ability to verify elements.

Using the Verify element present command, I changed from clicking on the image to only verifying it was present in the test I created.

The lower pane allows you to see a log of the actions and has a reference pane where you can get more information about the command currently selected. The reference pane has links in it that will take you to the official Selenium IDE API documents for more information about them.

Cisco Pushes Virtualization With Investment In VMware

With the investment, Cisco becomes the second major strategic investor in VMware this month after Intel said on July 9 that it invested $218.5 million in VMware.

Storage giant EMC said in February that it will sell a 10-percent stake in VMware through an IPO in a move to help VMware employees realize more value from the company independent of what they receive as part of the overall EMC organization.

EMC acquired VMware in December of 2003 for $635 million.

Cisco's move to purchase $150 million of VMware's Class A common shares currently held by EMC, VMware's parent company, means that it will own approximately 1.6 percent of VMware's total outstanding common stock, which is less than one percent of the combined voting power of VMware's outstanding common stock.

VMware has also agreed to consider the appointment of a Cisco executive to VMware's board of directors at a future date, Cisco said.

The move fits well with Cisco's push into virtualization across the data center as addressed by Chambers at his company's Cisco Live 2007 end-user conference, held earlier this week in Anaheim, Calif.

"The role of virtualization, when you talk about where the industry is going, is huge: [it's] the ability first to be able to communicate to any server, any application, any content in your data center, and then to take that concept and drive it all the way through your home," said Chambers during his keynote address.

At the conference, Cisco said it is building out a data center specialization strategy that focuses on network infrastructure, storage networking, and application networking. The new specializations do not count toward a partners' certification status but do provide training and technology badges for partners that are building data center practices.

In an update to VMware's S-1 filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission, VMware wrote that the two companies also entered into a "routine and customary collaboration partnering" agreement.

That agreement "expresses the parties' intent to expand cooperative efforts around joint development, marketing, customer and industry initiatives," with Cisco's purchase "intended to strengthen intercompany collaboration towards accelerating customer adoption of VMware virtualization products with Cisco networking infrastructure and the development of customer solutions that address the intersection of virtualization and networking technologies."

That cooperation is causing excitement in the channel as solution providers look for ways to capitalize on growing customer interest in virtualization across ever-more parts of the data center.

Rob Wolfe, president and CEO of AvcomEast, a Silver Spring, Md.-based provider of server and storage virtualization technologies, said the investment is a direct fit with how his company does business, especially as Cisco moves toward offering solution providers data center specialization around virtualization.

"Cisco has been making great strides in storage," Wolfe said. "Now it is making strides in virtualization, and now it is investing in VMware. The prospect of a virtualization specialization from Cisco is very appealing, and fits with the server virtualization work we do with VMware."

Cisco's investment in VMware is intriguing, Wolf said. "We'll have to see where it goes. We are a VMware partner, but not an EMC partner. But EMC has done a great job with VMware. It's a great example of how to let an acquired company survive and thrive, and not get stagnant like what usually happens. The way that EMC has respected the VMware brand is how others should invest."

Peter Castaldi, principal at Kovarus Technical Solutions, a Cisco partner in San Francisco that also teams with data center players such as VMware, EMC, Network Appliance and Symantec, said he finds the investment an interesting move.

"We're seeing more virtualization to the back end of the server, and the glue is networking," Castaldi said. "What companies like Cisco and Symantec do is very important. They help customers feel comfortable about moving virtualization from test-dev (testing and development) to production applications. Having the partnership between Cisco/VMware will deliver them piece of mind that they can move to successful deployment with Cisco backing them."

Such investment helps move concepts like virtualization from buzzword to reality, Castaldi said. "Customers have seen virtualization as a buzzword, but now they are starting to see companies like Cisco invest, which helps companies like us," he said.

A Cisco spokesperson said that Cisco views virtualization as a large market opportunity and one that is transforming the data center and computing environment. The spokesperson also said that Cisco invests in companies primarily with strategic intent and with the interest to stay close to key market transitions, and that Cisco's investment will help the Cisco and VMware collaborate on solutions that address the intersection of networking and virtualization technologies.

Jennifer Hagendorf Follett contributed to this story.

VMware, Genilogix Team Up on Application Testing Solution

VMware introduced Lab Manager last December as an add-on to its Virtual Infrastructure 3 (VI3) platform. Lab Manager 2.5, released Monday, features several additions to the technology VMWare gained with the acquisition of Akimbi Systems last June. The latest version features an ROI calculator for resellers to project savings for potential customers, the Genilogix integration with HP Quality Center as well as a similar integration by Borland with its own Silk Central Test Manager software, more storage support, expanded OS support to include 64-bit and SMP systems as well as Solaris 10 and Microsoft Vista, and added server maintenance and clean-up features.

While cost savings remain the core value proposition of VMware's virtualization solutions, the flexibility gained by going virtual is a "more interesting" selling point, according to James Phillips, VMware's senior director of virtual software life-cycle automation solutions.

"If you virtualized your data center using VMware, you're going to lower the cost of infrastructure, operating costs, cooling and power, etc. But the second promise is more interesting. If you virtualize your data center, that level of flexibility can create solutions to problems in IT management that were previously unimagined," Phillips said.

"Lab Manager builds on top of VI3 in a way that leverages the ability to chip away at problems associated with application development."

The new Genilogix product is called VMware Lab Manager Add-in for HP Quality Center. The Blue Bell, Penn.-based VAR will bundle any purchase of Lab Manager or Quality Center with the other, said HB Farris, practice manager of function testing services at Genilogix.

"Our client base is primarily companies that have testing organizations, any company that needs to test vendor software or their own in-house developed applications. The beta version [of Lab Manager 2.5] was very impressive and the feature set was wonderful, where you can quickly provision applications. One of the key benefits between the VMware tool and Quality Center that our add-in addresses is coordination between the testing environment and the genuine testing processes," Farris said.

"This add-in gives you the ability to deploy a virtual testing environment and the ability to run unattended automated tasks in off-hours."

The starting price for Lab Manager 2.5 is $15,000, in addition to the necessary VI3 licenses which cost $1,000 per dual core server.

VMware is offering a $35,000 bundle that comes with Lab Manager, five two-way VI3 licenses and five two-way Lab Manager agent licenses and 10 copies of VMware Workstation.

Performance of VMware Workstation 17 VMs on a SimplyNUC Mini-PC

In-Depth

Performance of VMware Workstation 17 VMs on a SimplyNUC Mini-PC

In this series of articles, I looked at SimplyNUC's latest AMD-powered mini-PC, the Moonstone. I found that it was a very powerful and well-built 4-inch x 4-inch PC with outstanding performance capabilities. I also looked at VMware Workstation 17 and some of its capabilities.

In this article, I will look at the performance of Workstation VMs running on the Moonstone system.

Cloning VMs
VMware Workstation supports two mechanisms to create copies of VMs: full and linked clones.

A full clone makes an exact copy of the files that make up the VM. In theory, a fully cloned VM will perform slightly better than a cloned VM; this will be tested.

A linked clone shares the virtual disks with the parent VM and keeps track of the changes made to the linked clone machine. Linked clone machines can be created in seconds, taking up considerably less disk space. A snapshot needs to be taken of the parent VM before a link clone can be made from it.

For my testing, I created a Basic Windows 10 VM to use as a basis for my full and linked clones.

Performance of a Very, Very Large VM
The first VM I created was a Windows 10 PRO VM with 16 CPU cores and the maximum recommended memory (27.3 GB) of RAM. I chose 16 vCPUs as VMware documentation states that a VM cannot have more vCPUs than logical (not physical) cores on a system.

I powered on the VM, logged into it, and installed the Edge DX agent on it to monitor the VM's performance and the host systems.

As I was primarily concerned with the processors' performance, I ran Cinebench on it. It reported a score of 14264 using all the cores in the VM and a score of 1755 when using a single core.

While running the test, Edge DX showed that the VM used 100 percent of the VM CPU power.

Edge DX showed that the physical system used 97 percent of its CPU power.

Fully Cloned Small Windows VMs
I wanted to see how efficient it would be with smaller VMs, as smaller VMs are what I will be mainly using.

I shut down the system and created a full VM with four vCPUs and 2GB of RAM.

I powered on the VM, logged into it and ran Cinebench. It reported a score of 5115 using all four VM cores and 1661 when using a single core.

Edge DX showed that the VM used 100 percent of its CPU power during the multi-core and 26 percent during the single-core tests.

Edge DX showed that the physical system used 20 percent of its CPU during the multi-core test and 4 percent of CPU power during the single-core test.

Linked Cloned Small Windows VMs
To see what would happen when I overcommitted the CPUs, I created six linked cloned VMs with the same profile (4 vCPUs and 2GB of RAM) to determine what would happen. This made 24 VCPUs (4 vCPUs x 6 VMs) committed to the VMs. It took less than 30 seconds to create all the linked clones.

I powered on the VMs and logged into them. During this action, the CPU usage reached 75 percent, and the CPU queue length reached 19 during the login process.

I could start and run Cinebench on all the VMs without any issues. The VMs reported 1144, 1169, 1146, 3588, 1268 and 2228 scores. The highest score came from the parent VM, while the lower scores came from the linked systems.

Edge DX showed that the physical system used 100 percent of its CPU and had a CPU queue length of 29 when Cinebench ran.

Performance Comparison
I compared the data from running Cinebench on Moonstone to two other small form factor (SFF) PCs I had previously tested: the Intel NUC 13 Pro and the Acemagic AD15.

The Intel NUC 13 is the standard bearer for the NUC system and has a 13th-generation Intel Core i7-1360P processor with 12 cores, four of which are performance (P) and eight efficient (E). It has a total thread count of 16.

The Acemagic AD15 is a low-cost mini-PC with an 11th-generation Intel Core i7-11800H processor with eight cores and 16 threads.

The Moonstone has an AMD Ryzen 9-7940HS processor with eight cores and 16 threads.

The Moonstone stood out when I ran Cinebench on the system's base OS.

The graph below shows that the Moonstone was the most performant of these systems.

The chart below compares the Cinebench score I ran on the three physical systems and the VMs running on them.

Broadcom ends VMware perpetual license sales, testing customers and partners
The logo of American cloud computing and virtualization technology company VMware is seen at the Mobile World Congress (MWC), the telecom industry's biggest annual gathering, in Barcelona on March 2, 2023.

Broadcom has moved forward with plans to transition VMware, a virtualization and cloud computing company, into a subscription-based business. As of December 11, it no longer sells perpetual licenses with VMware products. VMware, whose $61 billion acquisition by Broadcom closed in November, also announced on Monday that it will no longer sell support and subscription (SnS) for VMware products with perpetual licenses. Moving forward, VMware will only offer term licenses or subscriptions, according to its VMware blog post.

VMware customers with perpetual licenses and active support contracts can continue using them. VMware "will continue to provide support as defined in contractual commitments," Krish Prasad, senior vice president and general manager for VMware's Cloud Foundation Division, wrote. But when customers' SnS terms end, they won't have any support.

Broadcom hopes this will force customers into subscriptions, and it's offering "upgrade pricing incentives" that weren't detailed in the blog for customers who switch from perpetual licensing to a subscription.

These are the products affected, per Prasad's blog:

  • VMware Aria Automation
  • VMware Aria Suite
  • VMware Aria Operations
  • VMware Aria Operations for Logs
  • VMware Aria Operations for Networks
  • VMware Aria Universal
  • VMware Cloud Foundation
  • VMware HCX
  • VMware NSX
  • VMware Site Recovery Manager
  • VMware vCloud Suite
  • VMware vSAN
  • VMware vSphere

Subscription-based future

Broadcom is looking to grow VMware's EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization) from about $4.7 billion to about $8.5 billion in three years, largely through shifting the company's business model to subscriptions, Tom Krause, president of the Broadcom Software Group, said during a December 7 earnings call, per Forbes.

"This shift is the natural next step in our multi-year strategy to make it easier for customers to consume both our existing offerings and new innovations. VMware believes that a subscription model supports our customers with the innovation and flexibility they need as they undertake their digital transformations," VMware's blog said.

With changes effective immediately upon announcement, the news might sound abrupt. However, in May, soon after announcing its plans to acquire VMware, Broadcom CEO Hock Tan signaled a “rapid transition” to subscriptions.

At the time, Tan pointed to the importance of maintaining current VMware customers' happiness, as well as leveraging the VMware sales team already in place. However, after less than a month of the deal's close, reports point to concern among VMWare customers and partners.

Customer and partner concerns

VMware's blog said "the industry has already embraced subscription as the standard for cloud consumption." For years, software and even hardware vendors and investors have been pushing IT solution provider partners and customers toward recurring revenue models. However, VMware built much of its business on the perpetual license model. As noted by The Stack, VMware in February noted that perpetual licensing was the company's "most renowned model."

VMware's blog this week listed "continuous innovation" and "faster time to value" as customer benefits for subscription models but didn't detail how it came to those conclusions.

"Predictable investments" is also listed, but it's hard to imagine a more predictable expense than paying for something once and having supported access to it indefinitely (assuming you continue paying any support costs). Now, VMware and its partners will be left convincing customers that their finances can afford a new monthly expense for something they thought was paid for. For Broadcom, though, it's easier to see the benefits of turning VMware into more of a reliable and recurring revenue stream.

Additionally, Broadcom's layoffs of at least 2,837 VMware employees have brought uncertainty to the VMware brand. A CRN report in late November pointed to VMware partners hearing customer concern about potential price raises and a lack of support. C.R. Howdyshell, CEO of Advizex, which reportedly made $30 million in VMware-tied revenue in 2022, told the publication that partners and customers were experiencing "significant concern and chaos” around VMware sales. Another channel partner noted to CRN the layoff of a close VMware sales contact.

But Broadcom has made it clear that it wants to "complete the transition of all VMware by Broadcom solutions to subscription licenses," per Prasad's blog.

The company hopes to convince skeptical channel partners that they'll see the way, too. VMware, like many tech companies urging subscription models, pointed to "many partners" having success with subscription models already and "opportunity for partners to engage more strategically with customers and deliver higher-value services that drive customer success."

However, because there's no immediate customer benefit to the end of perpetual licenses, those impacted by VMware's change in business strategy have to assess how much they're willing to pay to access VMware products moving forward.

VMware brings full 3D acceleration for Windows 11 on Apple Silicon Macs0 0

A MacBook Air running Windows 11 using VMware Fusion

VMWare has announced a new version of its Fusion virtualization software for Macs. According to the company, VMware Fusion Tech Preview 2023 is a "significant leap forward" for its software on macOS, with the main highlight being the full 3D acceleration of Windows 11 for ARM.

3D hardware acceleration for VMware Fusion on macOS is a major change for customers. It allows better screen resolution, smoother and more responsive UI, support for DirectX 11 3D games, and more. In other words, adding hardware acceleration to VMWare Fusion is like installing a GPU driver on your Windows PC.

3D hardware acceleration is not the only new feature in VMware Fusion Tech Preview 2023. Developers also implemented most VMware Tools features, such as clipboard sharing and "impossibly fast" drag-and-drop. There is also autofit support for dynamic resolution adjusting, time sync, improved security, and more.

A screenshot of VMware Fusion running Windows 11 in macOS Sonoma

VMware also notes that the Tech Preview features an improved encryption scheme, and it will prompt users to upgrade to the new encryption cipher at boot. Since the new scheme is not backward compatible, you cannot use the updated virtual machines with previous Fusion versions. To mitigate this inconvenience, VMware recommends cloning and backing up your VMs before upgrading and testing VMware Fusion Tech Preview 2023.

Finally, in the official blog, developers said they have more features and improvements in the pipeline, so users can expect more additions in future updates.

These updates are most welcomed, but we’re still not quite done with what the Fusion has to offer in 2023… We have a few more exciting features and improvements in the pipeline which are not included in Tech Preview 2023 that we can’t wait to share!

For now, this is just a sneak peek of what’s coming in the following months, and we hope to get your feedback on it so and maybe iron out a bug or two along the way!

You can find links for downloading VMware Fusion Tech Preview 2023 in the official blog. There is also a testing guide with step-by-step instructions for upgrading Windows 11 and installing VMware Tools.

VMware causes Blue Screen on Windows 11/10

If VMware is causing a Blue Screen error on Windows 11/10, the following tips could be handy for you. There are different reasons why your host computer fails to load the VMware virtual machine. This article explains some of the most common causes and solutions to mitigate this issue within moments.

VMware causes blue screen on Windows 11/10

If VMware causes a Blue Screen on Windows 11/10, follow these steps:

  1. Update VMware
  2. Low computer resource
  3. Turn off Hyper-V
  4. Disable other virtual machines
  5. Corrupt ISO file

To know more about these steps, continue reading.

1] Update VMware

It is probably the very first thing you need to check. There could be times when VMware might fail to make your virtual machine up and running due to a glitch or bug. If you have recently updated your VMware app, it might come with a bug that could cause the aforementioned issue.

In most cases, companies recognize the bug and roll out an update almost immediately. If the same thing happens with your VMware installation, chances are they have already released an update. That is why it is recommended to check the official statement and install the update if anything has been released.

2] Low computer resource

Although the official statement says something about the 1.3GHz processor and 2GB of RAM, you might not be able to run a virtual machine smoothly or at all, having such resources. It is always recommended to configure much better hardware than the mentioned one.

If you have an old x64 architecture, you might not be able to run VMware virtual machines. In other words, there is a high chance of getting the blue screen error on the host computer while running the virtual OS. That is why it is recommended to have a better hardware configuration to bypass the BSOD

Pro tip: You can open Task Manager alongside VMware to check which app is consuming more RAM and other resources. Then, you can close such unnecessary apps to assign more CPU resources to VMware.

3] Turn off Hyper-V

Fix VirtualBox Installer Installation failed error

Hyper-V is a Level 1 hypervisor that makes the host computer into a virtual PC. On the other hand, VMware is a Level 2 hypervisor that uses the host computer to build the virtual machine. That is why if you enabled Hyper-V earlier, you might not be able to use VMware or VirtualBox-like virtual machine apps simultaneously. You must disable either of them. In other words, if you want to use VMware, you need to disable Hyper-V.

To disable Hyper-V in Windows 11/10, do the following:

  • Click on the Taskbar search box.
  • Search for windows features.
  • Click on the individual search result.
  • Remove the tick from the Hyper-V checkbox.
  • Click the OK button.
  • Let it finish all the processes.
  • Restart your computer.

Once done, you will be able to use VMware without any BSOD.

4] Disable other virtual machines

Many people often use multiple virtual machine apps, such as VirtualBox, VMware, etc., simultaneously. In most situations, such workflow might cause a blue screen error on your computer. That is why it is recommended to disable other virtual machine software. For that purpose, you can take the help of the Task Manager to terminate all the dependencies.

5] obtain ISO file again

If VMware causes a blue screen while installing the virtual machine OS, it is suggested to obtain the ISO file again. If the ISO comes with some corrupt files, there is a chance of getting BSOD while using that ISO in the virtual machine. You can follow this guide to download Windows 11/10 ISO directly.

Can VMware cause BSOD?

Yes, VMware can cause BSOD on Windows 11/10 PC. As said earlier, there could be countless reasons why you might get a blue screen error due to having VMware on your computer. For your information, some common reasons are mentioned in this article, and it is recommended to follow them to get rid of this issue.

Is VMware compatible with Windows 11?

Yes, VMware is compatible with Windows 11. If you have successfully installed Windows 11 without compromising the official system requirements, you can easily install VMware on your computer. As per the official statement, VMware requires a minimum of 2GB RAM along with 1.3GHz clock speed. On the other hand, it runs on almost all the x64 architecture without any problem.

Malware Fighter Pro from IObit software uses Two Anti-Virus Engines – Did you know?

In this quick post, I wanted to deliver it a try to the IObit Malware Fighter software. I have to warn you a bit here, because when I have installed the Free version, it also installs two other software without my consent. (not very nice indeed). It also installs iTop VPN and iTop Screen Recorder. I do hope this happens ONLY with the free version. Anyway, two clicks and it's uninstalled if you don't need those. The reason I downloaded the product is that I wanted to have a look at their software and I know that IObit has many more products (Advanced system care etc…) you could be interested in. But let's start and delve into the product.

More and more Malware is around. That's a fact. Perhaps it is high time to get good anti-malware software. Let's see if the one from IObit is the one that stands up. Malware today, it's not only some bad guy's software running on your system. You need anti-phishing protection as those phishing attacks are more and more frequent and sophisticated. Ransomware is on the rise not only within the enterprise section, but touches SMBs, and individuals too.

Malware Fighter Pro is an award-winning antivirus software that protects your PC from various online threats, such as viruses, ransomware, spyware, trojans, adware, and worms. Malware Fighter Pro uses two antivirus engines, its own and Bitdefender, to detect and remove malware with high accuracy and speed. It also has a large anti-malware database that can detect over 200 million malware.

The software has multiple layers of protection for your PC and your privacy. It has a ransomware protection feature that prevents your files from being encrypted by hackers. It also has a privacy protection feature that allows you to lock your sensitive data with a password and block unauthorized access. Moreover, it has a webcam security feature that prevents intruders from using your webcam without your permission.

Malware Fighter Pro also enhances your browsing experience by keeping you away from phishing websites, malicious ads, and tracking cookies12. It also has a browser password guard feature that encrypts and protects your local browser password data from leaks. Malware Fighter Pro is easy to use and compatible with all versions of Windows OS. It has a user-friendly interface and a smart scan mode that can scan your PC in a few minutes. It also has a behavior guard feature that warns you of potential threats or suspicious activities in advance.

According to the official website of IObit Malware Fighter Pro, it uses two antivirus engines, its own and Bitdefender, to achieve a higher level of malware detection and removal. The IObit engine can detect and remove common malware, while the Bitdefender engine can handle more advanced and sophisticated threats. By combining these two engines, Malware Fighter Pro can provide comprehensive and reliable protection for your PC.

The free version enables you to have basic protection where not all areas of protection are active. Screenshot from the lab below.

You need to buy the Pro version to enable the Anti-ransomware engine, Bitdefender engine, MBR guard, USB disk guard, Behavior guard or browser password guard.

However, some experts advise against using more than one antivirus program on the same computer, as this can cause conflicts, performance issues, and false alerts. I don't think it is the case as the integration with Bitdefender is done internally so you don't need to run Bitdefender software and at the same time IObit software.

On the Toolbox menu, you can enable a Safe Box which can block access to some files/folders on your system. Also, you can see that a VPN system comes as an optional offer.

The menu on the left hand side has several sections. One of them is scan section.

Scan

You can initiate a Smart scan, Full Scan, or custom scan. Options that might be useful when suspecting that your system has a problem. You can drag and drop file onto the window and do a custom scan or execute full scan with a delete/clean action with shutdown at the end of the scan.

Example of custom scan with System Critical Areas and Suspicious processes…..

Browser protect

This menu is again, show what's protected and what's not. You can add Surfing protection or Anti-Tracking, within the pro version. Anonymous Online option is the iTOP VPN protection we have talked about in the beginning of the article. It's there.  If you don't have or use other VPN… why not? It's integrated somehow in the product where by clicking the link you get to the page with the offer and install it on your system.

Looks solid.

Overall, the software looks like destined for nonexperienced users who need to be carried by hand. It's simple to use and navigate through.

The IOBit Malware Fighter Pro has been here for a very long time. The first release was out back in 2010 so the product has a good background with a lot of experience under the belt. We cannot test the effectiveness of removals or detections, but it seems like a solid product that has its place here.

Take a look here – Malware Fighter Pro

Can I recommend using it? For sure I can. Except for the “forced install” the Malware Fighter is a good piece of software, but it's not alone within the security space. It's just one of them, with long experience in the field.

Broadcom ends VMware perpetual license sales, testing customers and partners I wonder how much it would eat into their revenue if another company came out with a similar product with the old fashioned pricing scheme, you know, they, you buy it, you bought it, like normal sales?

I would love for a company to actually stand up and say no to subscription payments so this scheme can finally be put out to pasture.
