Broadcom drops bombshell with ‘termination notice’

A “termination notice” sent to VMware channel partners by Broadcom on Dec. 22, as they were preparing to head out of the office for the holidays, did not leave many feeling the warmth of the season, says Jason Van der Schyff, the chief operating officer (COO) of private cloud infrastructure vendor Softiron.

The electronic notice Van der Schyff refers to, a copy of which was obtained today by Channel Daily News, begins by stating that “for more than two years, VMware has outlined its plan to transition from a perpetual to a subscription-based business model. This is consistent with the overall market trend toward cloud operating models and was reinforced with the launch and evolution of VMware’s Partner Connect Program.

“On December 11, 2023, VMware by Broadcom announced its simplified licensing model and solution portfolio. Broadcom and VMware are driven by technology and innovation and have a shared passion for, and commitment to, partner profitability and success. You are now well positioned to capture substantial growth opportunities for delivering advanced, innovative cloud infrastructure and associated services wherever your customers need.”

The big news, which took the form of a termination notice, can be found in the next paragraph, which stated Broadcom would be “transitioning” all of the VMware’s partner programs to the “by-invitation only award winning Broadcom Advantage Partner Program, effective Feb. 5, 2024.

“Effective today, we are also announcing changes to VMware’s partner programs which will exist through February 4, 2024. Please refer to the VMware partner program operative changes on the VMware by Broadcom Essential Partner Information page.

“Also, effective today, all VMware Partner Incentive programs will end on or before February 4, 2024.”

The by-invitation only part of the program means that actual invitations to join are scheduled to start being issued this month, and the timeline will vary by partner type and route to market, the notice stated.

Invitations, “will be sent to the partner identified primary and alternate contacts on file with VMware. Take this opportunity to ensure your company’s contact information is correct within the ‘My Company’ section of the Partner Connect portal home page.”

Van der Schyff countered that the  “greater channel has watched as Broadcom disassembled CA and Symantec, further limiting the available SKUs to make margin on. Seemingly irrespective of the promises of Broadcom, they are doing the exact same thing with VMware.

“Early in the narrative, we heard that Broadcom essentially had worked out how to pay for the US$60+ billion acquisition with the VMware revenue from the top 10 per cent of their clients. So, if the play here is to get as much revenue in as short time as possible, eviscerate VMware’s customer base, and move on to the next thing, they simply do not need their channel. I think that is exactly what we are seeing.”

It is not just many VMware partners wondering or worried about next steps, but end user organizations as well.

Andrew Moloney, Softiron’s chief strategy officer, wrote in a blog issued on Nov. 27, five days after the deal formally closed, “with the Broadcom acquisition now closed and the wide-reaching layoffs and restructuring starting to happen, another inflection point has been created.”

It is, he maintained, an inflection point that is “causing many IT leaders to re-evaluate their strategic options and chart the right path for the future – one that may or may not include VMware. I get to talk to many industry analysts in my role and they all tell me the same thing – everyone is looking for a credible alternative to VMware as their license renewals come due.

“And for those not willing or able to migrate all their workloads to the public cloud, their options are severely limited.”

Moloney added that anyone would be “hard-pressed to find a VMware customer who is happy with the cost of their VMware software licensing. And with a ~US$61Bn acquisition to pay for, prior form in that regard, and significant earnings promises being made to investors in an already saturated market, VMware customers are increasingly anxious that those licensing bills are only going one-way post-acquisition as Broadcom leadership exerts its authority.”

The 24-hour traffic jam up and down Las Vegas Boulevard may be extra slow next week as solution providers scramble to attend both Hewlett-Packard's and VMware's partner conferences, which just happened to be scheduled for the same time.

Given the large number of solution providers who count both HP and VMware as among their top vendor partners, VARs next week will be looking closely at how to schedule meetings, attend the most important presentations, and even bring in extra people in order get as much technology and channel information from both vendors.

VMware will hold pre-conference boot camps from February 11 to 13, with its VMware Partner Exchange conference slated to run from February 13 to 16. The vendor is hosting its activities at the Venetian/Palazzo hotel in Las Vegas.

HP, meanwhile, is holding its HP Global Partner Conference at the Aria Resort and Casino from February 13 to 16.

VMware typically holds its Partner Exchange in mid-February, while HP's partner conference, formerly known as HP Americas Partner Conference, was held in late March or early April in the past.

Neither HP nor VMware would comment on how it came to pass that both companies had partner conferences during the same week despite the long-term strategic relationship they have with each other.

However, spokespeople of both vendors e-mailed statements saying that they are now working together on planning.

HP, in a statement attributed to the company's conference organizers, wrote, "It was a coincidence that we both selected the same dates for our conferences. Once we learned that we both were holding conferences on the same date, we began working collaboratively to ensure coordination. There is mutual executive engagement and mutual partner engagement from both HP and VMware. VMware is a valued partner and we are committed to contributing to two successful events."

A VMware public relations spokesperson said in an e-mail, “We’ve been collaborating with HP during planning phases to ensure our common partners have a positive experience at both events.”

Despite the fact that the two locations are separated by less than a mile-and-a-half, trying to coordinate attendance at both channel conferences at the same time means extra work for solution providers.

"If nothing else, it will be interesting to go back and forth," said Chris Case, president of Sequel Data Systems, an Austin, Texas-based solution provider and partner to HP and VMware.

Case said he plans to focus mainly on the HP side, while his company's director of services will spend most of his time at VMware.

"The bulk of our services business is based on virtualization, and not so much on hardware," he said.

When Sequel first saw that the two partner conferences would be held simultaneously, its executives were upset, Case said. "But then we thought it's good to handle it in one trip," he said. "This will help consolidate our travel. We have other events we're attending in Las Vegas this May and June, so this will mean three trips to Las Vegas, not four."

Case said he expects most solution providers will send multiple people to the conferences for each product line. "Some will cross over between the two if needed," he said. "Others will attend one partner conference exclusively, and then report to their colleagues after the event."

Next: Divide And Conquer The Main Strategy

For World Wide Technology, a Maryland Heights, Mo.-based HP and VMware partner, the planned strategy is divide and conquer, said Bob Olwig, vice president of business strategy.

WWT plans to have between 20 to 25 people attend the VMware conference to get product training and certification classes, and about seven people at the HP conference where there are fewer technical training opportunities, Olwig said. "So it's not an issue for us," he said. "It cuts down on a little airplane time. But it's not an issue."

In addition, WWT's top executives will try to attend both conferences, Olwig said. "We've got good friends with both," he said. "We gotta tip a beer with them."

Denali Advanced Integration also plans to use the divide and conquer strategy, said John Convery, executive vice president of vendor relations and marketing for the Redmond, Wash.-based solution provider and partner of both HP and VMware.

"We'll make sure we get coverage," he said. "We decide who goes where. And because it's in the same town, we can rotate."

Word from HP and VMware is that there will be some joint events and parties, as well as joint meetings with senior executives, as both understand the importance of their partnership, Convery said.

Even so, it is hard to understand how this happened, he said. "You would think somebody would have a master calendar and coordinate with strategic partners," he said. "On my wall, I have a master calendar of events so we can do all our planning, Last year in September or October, we already saw the overlap. Las Vegas is the only place big enough for events like these, so companies have to plan a year ahead."

The only real potential problem for partners is that their schedules get too tight trying to attend both conferences, Convery said. "Sometimes you can't get your 'A' team in the middle of things, so you have to send the 'B' team, or your technical people. But you need the top executives to make the decisions."

Channel Madness Quarterfinal Results: Lenovo’s Cato, VMware’s Flinders Advance

ARTICLE TITLE HERE

The voting for the quarterfinal round of the CRN Channel Madness Tournament of Chiefs is closed, the scores are in, and the Enterprise Eight are about to learn their fate.

With titles up for grabs in the Infrastructure, Hardware, Cloud and Security regions, let's look at who's advancing to the Field of Four.

When we last checked in on the Hardware region matchup between Dell EMC's Joyce Mullen and Lenovo's Rob Cato, Mullen had pulled ahead with a slim lead, but over the last 24 hours of voting Cato dug deep and surged ahead, pulling out a victory with 71 percent of the vote to Mullen's 29 percent.

In the Cloud region, Veeam's Kevin Rooney tried to mount a comeback against VMware's Jenni Flinders but the gap proved insurmountable, with Flinders winning 58 percent to 42 percent.

In the Infrastructure region, NetApp's Jeff McCullough found a good game plan against Gordon Mackintosh of Extreme Networks and stuck with it, winning 56 percent to 44 percent.

And in the Security region, FireEye's Chris Carter brought the heat in his matchup against Kendra Krause of Sophos, winning 66 percent to 34 percent.

So in the Field of Four, NetApp's Jeff McCullough will meet Lenovo's Rob Cato, while VMware's Jenni Flinders will take on Fire Eye's Chris Carter.
