Cisco Systems is a company that has grown both organically and via acquisitions. As such, the networking giant has a huge portfolio of products and services that have historically been disparate. But Cisco is working to remedy that.
The company at Cisco Live 2022 unveiled a breakthrough in network management. The very popular Cisco Catalyst portfolio can now be managed via the cloud using the simple Meraki dashboard. But that’s not the only integration Cisco has been piecing together. The company’s flagship Webex collaboration offering is now feeding Cisco’s WAN Insights engine and the security portfolio is being united, according to the San Jose, Calif.-based company. It’s music to the ears of Cisco partners who are deploying these solutions but who now have a more unified networking, security and collaboration story to bring to their end customers.
Integration isn’t the only thing that has been keeping the company busy. Cisco Chair and CEO Chuck Robbins sat down with CRN at Cisco Live to talk about how the company is on “just the first step” of its unified networking story. He also discussed the macro issues that are impacting the tech industry, like supply chain constraints and how they are shaping the selling motion of channel partners. The global supply chain crisis has created a record-breaking backlog for Cisco, and the company is doing a lot of work behind the scenes to prioritize and triage the evolving situation. And speaking of selling motions, the Everything-as-a-Service (XaaS) model is gaining traction as the company released its second Cisco Plus offer earlier this month.
From the company’s simplification and integration work to supply chain and XaaS, here’s what Robbins told CRN in an exclusive interview at Cisco Live 2022.
With the announcement of Catalyst support on the Meraki platform, how big a deal is it that administrators can manage their network from a single pane of glass from the cloud?
I think it’s a significant milestone and I think it’s just the first phase. Todd [Nightingale, executive vice president and general manager of Cisco’s enterprise networking and cloud business] has done a great job with the organization of getting them here. But there’s a long list of things we’re going to do to leverage that [Meraki] dashboard and help continue to expand it, from monitoring to some level of configuration to looking at the rationalization of platforms over time. There’s a lot of things that will come as a result of it. I’m just really happy we got that out and proud of what they announced.
Partners are saying Cisco is tearing down walls to create a more unified networking story. Do you agree with that assessment?
I think that we’re bringing more offers to the market today that require integration across business units than we ever have, and this is probably a banner day for that. But there’s a lot more coming.
Look at the integrations between ThousandEyes and Talos Threat Intelligence service within AppDynamics. One of the ironic things they figured out is that Webex actually has a lot of analytics about internet performance, so now it’s feeding the [WAN Insights] engine data. Then, you have observability integration with Intersight, and [Nightingale] and Jonathan [Davidson, executive vice president and general manager, Cisco Mass-Scale Infrastructure] are working on private 5G and Wi-Fi 6 stuff together. There’s a lot of cross business unit work going on, and I think it’s a muscle that we’re going to build even more effectively as we go forward.
How is Cisco prioritizing its record-breaking backlog in the midst of a constrained supply chain?
We have a team of people that are doing this. And obviously, when the customer ordered matters. That’s the basic principle. But then you can imagine that we are working hard to prioritize first responders and those who have regulatory requirements. And a lot of those come in sort of ad hoc from customers who send us notes. I will say, though, that customers have been very conscientious about escalating for exceptions only when they need them. And in many cases, that conversation is around, ‘I need this stuff, I don’t need that—you can push it out, so don’t worry about that—but I need this stuff if you can help me.” And so, it’s actually allowed us to, in some cases, serve other customers. It’s just been complicated. It’s a daily triage for our team to try to get this done.
Do you think the supply chain crisis will accelerate the XaaS trend?
Considering that a lot of our services have hardware built into the core service, I wouldn’t say that it’s a significant accelerant because I’ve actually had some conversations where some of our challenges in getting some of these things adopted is actually still supply chain and trying to get that stuff out there. Like [for Cisco Plus] Hybrid Cloud, we went out and we allocated some equipment from our capacity to make sure we were getting those early adopters up and running so we could get the feedback because otherwise it would have taken a little longer, so I don’t think that you’re seeing an accelerant. I think [XaaS] is not immune to supply chain challenges, unfortunately. For pure SaaS offers, it’s obviously a different story.
Are partners coming along with Cisco on the XaaS business model transformation?
I think they are coming along with us. We just launched the SASE [Cisco Plus Secure Connect Now], and Cisco Plus Hybrid Cloud is still in early adoption. We have some architectural systems work that we’re doing that’ll make it a much more simple way for us to offer everything as a service. That work is being done right now and should come online in the fall, which will deliver us the ability to accelerate a lot of offers in this space.
What I would say, though, is one of the big things that we have seen in the partner community is a serious uptake on taking our technology and delivering managed services to the customer. I think the desire for these kinds of services from the customer is real. We launched a new [partner program role] called ‘Provider,’ which is a managed service provider program and there are almost 2,000 partners now that are delivering something. So, for me, that validates the model. And I think over time, what you’ll see is partners having a combination of their unique intellectual property baked into a managed service that they can deliver, as well as in some cases, they may deliver ours as a service to their customers as well. I think that’s where we’ll end up—probably 2023—we’ll start to see that really come together.
Customers don’t want to be systems integrators. It just takes too long. So, you create two opportunities where partners can go in and do that systems integration work more effectively and more quickly—that’s an opportunity for them. But at the end of the day, [customers] want the outcome one way or the other, buy it as a service, or buy it as an integrated, tightly wrapped solution from a partner. I think that’s where they’re building their managed service offerings as well, even if it’s just the management of on-premises capabilities. If it’s all packaged and done, I think a customer finds that more attractive because it helps them get to that outcome they’re trying to get to.
How important is it that partners wrap their own services around XaaS and Cisco managed services?
I think you’ll see us expose APIs on our own services. If you look at Meraki, that’s a great example where we deliver that as a service. But we also have partners who take that and add their own layer of capabilities on top because of the APIs we expose. So, I think you’ll see that that opportunity arise as well. But my view is to the extent you can, you want to deliver the partners the ability to add their intellectual property to it to differentiate their solutions.
Is your channel mix changing due to Cisco’s growing base of cloud and hyperscale business?
I think it has to anytime you start partnering with new partners, [especially] big ones. We’re doing more with the hyperscalers for sure [and] building out in the cloud marketplaces. And then, obviously looking at the managed services opportunity—we have really spent a lot of time at the leadership team level with Oliver [Tuszik, Cisco’s channel chief, pictured] around cloud marketplaces and managed services in particular, as he’s taken on this whole routes-to-market responsibility. Those are two of the big ones that we’re focused on right now. I think anytime you do that, you’ll see a big shift.
We’ve always been in the managed services space, but [Tuszik] has invested pretty significantly on service creation resources to help our partners actually think about and build plans to create those services—the marketing plans and sales plans. And it feels like customers are adopting those even at a faster pace than they used to. I would say that that particular provider will become a greater percentage. But it might still be some traditional providers who have moved into that space. It might be the same partner, but a different profile of what they look like.
Where should Cisco partners be placing their bets right now?
I think, clearly, security, which I think many of them already are. I think if you look at customers trying to re-architect their fundamental infrastructure to deal with these traffic patterns that we’re facing today, I think, ironically, partners could have a big role to play in just thinking about how you architect that. I think getting in the early phases of the observability space would be a good area for partners to start looking at, but it may not be for everybody early on, but over the next year or two, it would be one that I would definitely look at.
Then, obviously, hybrid work and really helping customers think through their strategy for hybrid work, I think that’s another big area. I also think DevNet. Grace [Francisco, vice president of Cisco developer relations strategy and experience] came in, and working for Liz [Centoni, Cisco’s chief strategy officer and general manager of applications], rearchitected our entire DevNet program. There’s now a standardized API architecture that teams are building, which gives these partners opportunities to build businesses on top of our platforms.
I have to say there’s probably more opportunity today than we’ve seen in 20 years. And I think that’s true for the partners as well.

The Destiny 2 Starcrossed exotic mission is here, and with it a brand new exotic for Guardians in Bungie’s space-faring FPS to get their hands on. But how does the quest work, what are its mechanics, and where is the secret chest hidden?
Here, we’re going to take you through the Destiny 2 Starcrossed exotic mission, explaining the mechanics and secrets you’ll need to know in order to come out on top. Much like the Wicked Implement mission before it, there’s a lot of fun to be had, and a great reward at the end, this time the Wish-Keeper exotic. The Starcrossed exotic mission in Destiny 2 explained
Here are the steps you’ll need to follow in order to obtain and complete the Destiny 2 Starcrossed exotic mission.
Obtain the quest by completing the opening mission of Week 4 of the Season of the Wish.
Enter the mission and navigate your way through the Black Garden and enemy squads.
Complete the first sequence and symbols puzzle with the Sire’s Obligation buff.
Complete the second puzzle with the Dam’s Gift buff by killing the Wyverns and eliminating the Vex boss.
Complete the third puzzle with the combined Crowned by Dragon’s buff, using both the mechanics you learnt from the last two encounters in unison.
Defeat the final boss using all the mechanics you’ve learnt. Then claim your rewards.
These are the general steps of course, so if you just wanted a quick overview and intend to learn the specifics yourself, we hope this helps. If you’re looking for a more detailed breakdown of each encounter however, keep on reading.
Step 1: Obtaining the exotic mission: Starcrossed
Before you can begin, you’ll need to actually unlock the mission. This is fairly straightforward to do, as you just need to play through the Season 23 story missions including Final Wish, Polysemy, Apophasis, Tautology, and Enthymeme. This does mean that the quest is unfortunately not available to you if you haven’t picked up the season pass.
Once you’ve finished the opening mission of week 4, speak to Crow. He’ll follow up on the events of that mission, telling you that they’ve tracked the stolen egg from Riven’s clutch to the Black Garden, and that Riven knows a secret way inside.
After this conversation is finished, the mission will appear on your map in the HELM. You’ll find it off to the bottom right, next to the Riven’s Lair and Coil seasonal activities. Click on it, and when you’re ready, launch into it.
Step 2: Navigating to the first encounter
Once you load into the mission, your first job will be some parkour and navigation. You’ll start underground, and need to jump from grassy outcropping to grassy outcropping. This isn’t a Darkness Zone, so falling off during the jumping puzzles isn’t a massive issue.

You’ll encounter some interactable fauna while navigating this area. Shooting the bulbous plants hanging from tree branches will cause them to unfurl, creating a flat, temporary platform you can use to progress. This mechanic is also present in the Garden of Salvation raid.
After you’ve navigated out, you’ll need to fight through a few enemies. First you’ll encounter some Vex, and then some Taken. Neither are particularly challenging, but you may want to take some care on solo runs or Legendary difficulty.
Step 3: The first encounter and puzzle
Starcrossed is fairly mechanically involved for an exotic mission, something we greatly enjoyed while running it. The first encounter is pretty simple. Before entering the area, you’ll run into an arrangement of rocks and flowers with glowing pools of light inside. Step into it and you’ll pick up a buff called Sire’s Obligation, which lasts about 50 seconds once you exit the pool. This buff allows you to damage the Taken Phalanx blocking the path, called an Obdurate Phalanx. Be aware that these enemies are tanky, you may want to use grenades or heavy ammunition to dispatch them. Once down, the barriers blocking the way will drop.
Head through and you’ll step into a larger arena with much the same mechanic. Three groups of Taken enemies will spawn around the area in set locations, each with an Obdurate Phalanx among them. The key here is that you need to defeat them in sequence. Three Last Wish symbols will appear above the blocked exit when you have the Sire’s Obligation buff. These will each match to one of the symbols that appear near the spawn locations of the Phalanxes. You need to go top-to-bottom, finishing off each one in the sequence the symbols are displayed in.
You’ll find a pool nearby to each Phalanx, though each will deactivate once you’ve beaten the Phalanx in that area. In between each defeated Phalanx you’ll also get a wave of Vex to contend with, including some Colossi. The arena is large with plenty of cover, so if you’re struggling, try picking off enemies from a distance first.
Step 4: The second encounter and puzzle
The next encounter adds something new to the table, introducing a new buff called Dam’s Gift. This buff has a different purpose, allowing you to traverse Darkness-infested zones of the mission safely. These zones will appear as shrouded in orange mist, and visibility within is slightly obscured. They also have the same length of buff timer. Without Dam’s Gift, you’ll be hit with the Unwelcome debuff, which will kill you.
Dam’s gift appears in pools of orange light surrounded by flowers, and like Sire’s Obligation, you’ll encounter an initial instance to show you the mechanic before the encounter.
Once you reach the next encounter area, you’ll need to use it to navigate to separated areas of the map. Your aim is very straightforward – you’re just looking to defeat the Gatekeeper Wyverns at each location, which will unlock shielded interactable nodes you can then “Imbue with Paracausal Power”. There are three nodes in total, and activating them will bring the teleporter system online. Once the third is active though, you’ll first need to defeat a final wave of Vex that spawn in.
They’ll spawn in the starting area of the encounter, and include a number of Hobgoblin snipers, another Wyvern, and a boss. None on their own are particularly grim threats, though taken together they can unleash a lot of firepower in quick succession. Try to make good use of cover and healing – solar buffs like Restoration work wonders here. Once these vex fall, the teleporter will open, and you can continue.
Step 5: The third encounter and combining the mechanics
After another spate of more challenging parkour, you’ll arrive at the third and penultimate encounter of the Starcrossed exotic mission. This one asks you to use both the mechanics of the previous puzzles together.
You’ll need to pick up the Sire’s Obligation buff, make note of the symbols and their sequence, then traverse into the orange mist areas in order to dispatch Obruadte Phalanxes in order. This means picking up the Dam’s Gift buff too. When you have both buffs at the same time, they’ll combine to grant the Crowned by Dragons buff. Crowned by Dragons can be refreshed by running through either pool, and will allow you to survive in orange mist while also damaging otherwise immune enemies.
Once you’ve defeated all three Phalanxes in order again, you’ll complete the encounter and be able to enter the final boss fight.
Step 6: Defeating the final boss
After the third encounter, it’s time to face down against the Vex Mind responsible for tracking and trapping Riven’s Ahamkara egg: Akardon: Pitiless Mind. To damage Akardon you’ll need the Crowned by Dragons buff. You can refresh it at any time by the pools on either side of the arena or the pools at the entrance, though the arena sides are guarded by Phalanxes.
Akardon doesn’t have any specific mechanics, but he will spawn in waves of Vex Harpies and Taken Goblins. Due to the Goblins immunity projection abilities, we’d recommend taking the time to safely dispatch them in between damaging the Vex Hydra.
He doesn’t have a huge health pool, so concentrated fire with meta DPS loadouts like the Whisper of The Worm or bipod rocket launchers should make quick work of him. Between decent cover, high enemy density, and an arena small enough to make refreshing the buff pretty straightforward, he’s not an insurmountable challenge.
Once he’s defeated, head through the exit. Here you’ll find an Ahamkara skeleton, retrieve Riven’s eggs, learn more about Riven’s backstory, and be able to open a chest which will drop the Wish-Keeper Strand exotic bow. It’s a pretty good weapon, able to deploy Snareweaver traps after charging up on precision hits and final blows, and dealing extra damage to Suspended targets. If you’re on the fence about whether it’s worth it, we’d argue that it is.
There’s one more secret worth picking up in this exotic quest – two hidden chests.
The first is tucked away right near the start of the mission. As you’re navigating through the ledges and across leaves, you’ll eventually come to a large branch leading to a narrow opening – your path towards the rest of the mission.
Instead of taking this opening, stop on the branch and look down. You should see a small ledge on your right leading to a tucked away alcove. Carefully navigate down here and you’ll be able to find a Dreaming City chest tucked away in the corner, which will deliver you one random Season of the Undying weapon when opened, as well as the Taranis’ Bounty triumph.
The second is found in Overland, the rainbow-decorated area just past the mission’s start. Head off to the left of Overland and you’ll find a Dam’s Gift pool, marked by an orange beam but fairly well tucked away. Pick up the buff, and look behind the waterfall directly above you. There will be an orange mist area you can now safely traverse. The second chest is inside. It’ll also deliver you Undying loot, and the Taranis’ Treasure triumph.

Cisco’s Michelle Ragusa-McBain at XChange 2022 shares five tips for SMB-focused MSPs as they craft marketing strategies, build their company culture and implement sales outreach efforts amid the hybrid work demands of employees and brand-new buying behaviors from customers.
MSPs As ‘Essential Workers’
It’s fair to say that MSPs serving small to midsize businesses have had to do a fair amount of thinking on their feet over the past two years as their customers’ businesses pivoted—in some cases, quite literally overnight—to hybrid or remote working and they had to find brand-new ways to take care of their end customers.
The SMB ecosystem is made up of about 400 million companies and a total 65 percent of all global employment. The opportunity? A $610 billion IT spend, according to Michelle Ragusa-McBain, global community lead and channel evangelist for MSP and XaaS for Cisco Systems.
In front of an audience of MSPs at CRN parent The Channel Company’s XChange 2022 event, Ragusa-McBain shared five tips that MSPs targeting SMBs should keep in mind as they craft and carry out their marketing strategies, build their company culture and implement sales outreach efforts amid the hybrid work demands of their employees and new buying behaviors of their end customers.
Here’s what Ragusa-McBain had to say.
Finding ‘Blue Ocean’ Opportunities
The majority—75 percent—of SMBs are eager to embrace new technologies but often have no IT team to help them. That’s where MSPs, or “essential workers,” come into play, Ragusa-McBain said.
MSP business prior to 2021 was predicted to grow by about 10 percent. But 2021 ended with a prediction of 23 percent expected business growth year over year, with no signs of slowing down, she said.
McKinsey reported that executives spent more on digitization in 2020 than at any other time in history. Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, 55 percent of businesses did not allow their employees to work from home, a statistic that quickly flipped as employees were sent home overnight. Seventy-six percent of global CEOs say that their business will be unrecognizable in the next five years.
“When I talk about the perfect storm, we all know that the pandemic disruption occurred. There is immense growth that is happening in our ecosystem, and we really want to figure out how we can seize those opportunities together,” she said.
Establish Your Professional Brand
It may sound like something every MSP has already done, but rather than focus on how they would like to be perceived, MSPs should be more concerned with what their customers actually think of them and what people say about them when they aren’t in the room, Ragusa-McBain said.
Establishing a brand starts on social media where, ironically, many MSPs lose their brand. Many companies are “lazy likers” or “voyeurs” on Twitter and LinkedIn, according to Ragusa-McBain. “They look around. They don’t touch anything. They don’t like anything. They don’t comment. Well, that’s not good for you and that’s not good for your customers. You’re not getting a benefit,” she said.
It’s critical that MSPs depict themselves in the ways they want to be seen to the audience they’re approaching. “If you want to be a visionary and a thought leader and a technology expert and a trusted adviser, you need to provide the people the content and the example that they’re looking for, that they’re hungry for,” Ragusa-McBain said, adding that MSPs should also be using LinkedIn to find the right demographics they’re trying to target and begin sharing.
The Future Of Work
MSPs can’t only look outward at their own customers or partners. They also have to look inward at their own employees and their work culture in 2022.
Via Technology, a solution provider focused on IoT, has seen business take off with customers in construction, federal, state and local governments, and educational institutions.
The company offers Office 365, hosted email, storage, help desk and tech support, and physical security solutions. On the IoT construction side, Via’s employees have been considered essential workers. Everyone else can work remotely, said Manuel Villa, president of Via Technology.
That’s one of the big shifts the company has made in the last two years, Villa said. “It’s a total hybrid situation now,” he added.
Eighty-three percent of employees said they don’t believe they need to be in an office to be productive. A vast majority—89 percent—of workers feel that their job should be flexible, and 54 percent said that they will move jobs just to gain what they’re looking for in flexibility.
“It turns out it’s not just about customer experience. It’s also about your employee experience,” Ragusa-McBain reminded attendees.
Double Down On Security
Cyberattacks happened once every 39 seconds during the pandemic and a whopping 94 percent of all malware was delivered by email, according to Ragusa-McBain.
“It was cybercriminal field day. They took their oldest tricks in the book, and they targeted those that were susceptible because it was a time of panic and insecurity,” she said.
That’s because prior to the pandemic, the majority of people didn’t work from home and thus were on secure devices. “I think now more than ever, we have this unique opportunity to look at what’s happening in the world around you and the cost. Each cyberattack can be valued at over $1 million approximately. And every 14 seconds a business falls victim to a ransomware attack,” she said. Only 50 percent of MSPs have cybersecurity insurance, she added.
MSPs need to nail down their incident response plan because an attack or breach isn’t a matter of “if” anymore, Ragusa-McBain said.
Cisco has always been a partner-first vendor and the pandemic and shifting market dynamics have only strengthened the company’s commitment to the channel and MSPs in particular, Ragusa-McBain said.
Cisco wants to create an inclusive community that brings partners together to share experiences and feedback. The company is holding virtual and in-person meet-ups to talk about the syllabus that are top of mind for MSPs, such as pricing, marketing, M&A and taking business to the next level, she said.
“What did we miss the most during the pandemic? Getting together in a room, seeing your friends, taking off your industry hats and being one with the people who are living it with you in the trenches,” she said.

The rapid awareness and adoption of artificial intelligence has increased concerns around security, governance, compliance and business risk.
The digital business imperative to Boost customer experience combined with a vastly more complex technology environment, comprising multiple clouds, the internet of things, containers, app integration and the popularity of open source, are driving need for better observability across technology stacks. But fragmented information technology environments, lack of talent and a spate of existing installed monitoring tools are preventing organizations from achieving their full-stack observability aspirations.
In this Breaking Analysis, we dig deeper into the trends in observability based on a recent custom study from our partners at Enterprise Technology Research. As always, we’ll provide our perspective on the market and players with a view toward trends to watch in 2024.
What is full-stack observability & O11Y?
Full-stack observability is the capability to discover the real-time status of each technology stack component in a distributed IT environment. It involves holistically viewing cloud-hosted applications, services, infrastructure, on-premises IT, K8s (there’s your O11Y hint) infrastructure and more. O11Y uses telemetry data such as metrics, logs, traces and other information from the entire IT environment to provide complete end-to-end visibility to understand the connection and dependencies among IT components.
FSO is more than just monitoring and reporting. It uses reasoning and often machine intelligence to draw conclusions about an environment to recommend change or even take action on behalf of humans.
New survey captures the customer mindset of FSO
FSO or O11Y has been a hot Topic in the press and analyst community. That’s why we’re so excited to share the results of a recent study from ETR.
ETR has an amazing custom research capability that we’re privileged to share with you. This particular study was done in partnership with New Relic Inc., which we promise has zero influence on the commentary and conclusions of this Breaking Analysis or the ETR analysis.
This particular study had 1,700 respondents and, unlike most of the work we share, had a global respondent base, with U.S. customers only accounting for about a quarter of the survey. The companies spanned multiple industries, all organization sizes (80% more than 5,000 employees) and mostly technology practitioners.
Like security, observability is a crowded market
It has grown out of the world of application performance monitoring or APM, network monitoring, log analytics, AI operations or AIOps, database performance management, dashboarding, error tracking and literally dozens of legacy and fragmented market segments. There are literally dozens and dozens of vendors in this space.
Here’s a trial using network monitoring as the sector of choice. In this space “other” is the leading vendor, which underscores how crowded the market is. But the likes of Splunk, Grafana, Dynatrace, Elastic, AppDynamics, open-source tools such as OpenTelemetry, Prometheus and the ELK stack, New Relic, Sumo Logic and more play in this specific market.
On the right-hand side of this chart you can see the sectors ETR tracked in this study – about 18, including distributed tracing, serverless monitoring, mobile monitoring, MLOps and so forth. Selecting each one in the pulldown will shuffle the deck of players.
Splunk leads in most, but as the leader everyone wants to attack it and get a piece of its market. It’s why Cisco Systems Inc. paid $28 billion for Splunk, because it has the largest footprint. But there are many others. For example, in application performance monitoring, Datadog, Dynatrace, AppD (also owned by Cisco) and New Relic join Splunk at the top of the list. In synthetic monitoring, Dynatrace and Datadog pop up as most popular along with Splunk. In distributed tracing, Grafana, Dynatrace, Prometheus and OpenTelemetry are cited more often than Splunk. And “other” is always prominent.
You get the point. FSO involves a lot of different capabilities and there are many vendors playing in the market. For example, here are some names in the other category you may or may not know: Lucidworks, Exabeam, Sentry, Moogsoft, Honeycomb, ChaosSearch, Graylog, ScienceLogic, Cribl, Monte Carlo, Observe, InfluxData and dozens more I could name. It’s crowded.
Consolidation continues to be a theme, but it’s not easy
The market is so fragmented and the budget pressures of 2022 and 2023 have caused a consolidation of tools.
This chart shows the number of observability tools installed in 2023 (top) as compared with 2022 (bottom). And you can see the reduction in the percentage of customers with five, six, seven and eight tools – highlighted in red. And the shift to one, two and three tools installed is shown by the red arrows.
But it’s clear that the movement in the past year is just scratching the surface as around 60% of customers cite that they have four or more tools. So more work must be done to accommodate greater consolidation. Having said that, around 30% of customers in the survey lean toward having multiple tools as a means of tapping best-of-breed capabilities.
Like in security, the quest for excellence often results in fragmentation.
Which vendors benefit most from consolidation?
When asked which vendor platforms customers prefer to consolidate on, about13% say they don’t want to consolidate. But Splunk, Dynatrace and Datadog are most commonly cited.
Once again, “other” is in the mix pretty prominently, with Elastic, AppD and New Relic also showing.
Now some interesting things change when you filter the data. For example, executive management prefers to consolidate on Dynatrace and surprisingly a somewhat higher percentage, 16%, say they don’t want to consolidate.
For what it’s worth, the small percentage of females in the survey want to consolidate on AppDynamics, a company Cisco acquired in 2017. Services and consultancies prefer to consolidate on Datadog.
So again this just underscores the complexity and varied preferences of the market.
Humans are still in the loop
Another notable finding in the survey is the degree to which manual labor is still a dominant force.
Despite the AI hype, fewer than 10% of customers say their incident detection and remediation workflows in the future will be mostly AI-led. But a huge percentage – around 75% as shown on this chart – expect to have some type of AI-led automation in their identification and remediation workflows.
Automation is a two-edged sword. It’s one of those alluring concepts, but there’s real caution around trusting machines to judge what actions should and shouldn’t be taken and when. So given the sensitive nature of change management, we would expect this trend to continue to lean toward AI-led automation, but it will take some time before humans are mostly out of the loop. Moreover, while many vendors claim to have AI, there’s a wide spectrum of capabilities, and customers should be very cautious about vendor claims in this regard.
Now, not surprisingly, the regulated industries of financial services, healthcare and government see a much lower tendency to be mostly-AI led in this context over the next year (well under 5% say mostly AI-led in this chart), whereas industries such as energy and high tech are much more likely to adopt AI aggressively in this space.
Interestingly, the data show that senior managements are more likely to push for AI adoption whereas the practitioners, who literally have their jobs on the line – that is, machines replacing humans or getting fired for implementing rogue automation – are much less optimistic.
What does O11Y do for your business?
According to more than 1,500 practitioners in this survey, there are many benefits.
Better uptime, improved efficiency, more secure environment and a better customer experience help developers be more productive because they’re doing less troubleshooting and the like. And this ostensibly leads to greater business agility and more revenue. Only one-half of 1% cited no benefit. This is across all roles, all geographies and all industries, by the way.
But there are challenges to adopting FSO, including the siloed nature of data and IT, tools creep, lack of talent… but the No. 1 pressure is lack of budget – that is, it’s perceived as too expensive. So the industry has an opportunity to better sell the benefits.
Perhaps retiring goofy terms like O11Y would help!
FSO trends to watch
Security remains the No. 1 priority in the ETR survey data and that requires better visibility. So we don’t expect FSO to be a fad that fades in 2024. Just the opposite, actually. As digital businesses fight for customers and access to real time data becomes more critical, FSO will only grow in prominence in our opinion.
The latest ETR survey data on the spending macro is showing some positive momentum for 2024 – but really toward the second half. Amazon Web Services Inc. Chief Executive Adam Selipsky said it best when he shared at the re:Invent in late November that we’ve seen better times, we’ve seen worse times, but we’ve never seen such uncertain times. True words of wisdom from the CEO of AWS.
Everyone is AI-crazed – including us – but your practitioners are cautious and probably skeptical that they have job security. So part of your challenge is to convince the doers that AI will bring new opportunities and relieve them of mundane and tedious tasks. And you’ll have to also put in processes to make sure that automation doesn’t create boo-boos because with the cloud and distributed computing, mistakes can travel fast.
The last point is that clearly the market generally and full-stack observability specifically are moving toward platforms. But the siloed nature of tech stacks, technical debt and sunk costs will mean a continued fragmented market. That said, those leaders with full-stack capabilities, cloud-native tooling and real AI will be in a good position to ride the consolidation wave in 2024 and beyond.

ASHEVILLE – McDowell County Emergency Services Director Will Kehler met with HCA Healthcare leadership Dec. 19 to discuss strategies to reduce wait times for patients arriving at Mission Hospital in ambulances.
The Citizen Times highlighted the cascading impacts of these extended wait times, which routinely exceed industry standards and sometimes stretch over an hour, on Western North Carolina’s emergency services systems over the past five months. These long wait times can compromise patient care during emergency situations and prevent paramedics, who have tended to patients outside of the Mission Hospital emergency department, from responding to calls in their respective service areas. North Carolina Attorney General Josh Stein cited this concern in a lawsuit filed against HCA and Mission last week.
Over the past few months, multiple emergency service agencies have made changes to their patient transport and drop-off policies to mitigate the impacts of these prolonged wait times on local counties. Now, HCA is beginning to take action to address this emergency service and patient safety issue, Kehler learned at the meeting he attended.
President of HCA’s North Carolina Division Greg Lowe, Mission Hospital Chief Executive Officer Chad Patrick and Mission Hospital Chief Operating Officer Wyatt Chocklett each attended the meeting with Kehler and his deputy, Adrienne Rivera Jones, Kehler told the Citizen Times Dec. 20.
At the meeting, HCA leadership proposed a new process for paramedics to drop patients off in an area in the emergency department, Kehler said. The target handoff time for patients arriving in ambulances would be less than 10 minutes, he said.
“I was encouraged by the meeting,” Kehler said. “I look forward to seeing the new process implemented.”
The Citizen Times asked Mission Hospital spokesperson Nancy Lindell for further details about the proposal, but Lindell would not disclose any specifics, or acknowledge the pending policy.
“We are working to better allocate our resources within the ER,” Lindell said in a statement.
Buncombe County Emergency Medical Services Division Manager Jamie Judd told the Citizen Times in a Dec. 20 email that Mission tried a new handoff process in an alternate area of the emergency department during the end of last week. That process, he said, has been put on hold for the moment.
Buncombe County spokesperson Lillian Govus told the Citizen Times that county officials have not received any formal communications from HCA about a policy change.
Deputy Chief of the Leicester Fire Department Nick Prestwood, who also works for Buncombe County EMS, confirmed what Judd told the Citizen Times.
McDowell County suspended noncritical patient transfers from Marion-based McDowell Hospital to Mission in early November. Kehler informed Mission leadership of the change in a letter, indicating that the long wait times created an untenable strain on the county’s emergency services system. Mission’s own transportation service – Regional Transport Services – would be responsible for shuttling patients to the Asheville hospital.
The initial pause lasted 45 days, but Kehler opted to extend the pause an additional 45 days to allow Mission to implement these strategies, according to a Dec. 20 news release.
Last week, Stein sued HCA and Mission for violating the terms of the 2019 agreement to buy the Mission Health system. Specifically, Stein alleged that HCA and Mission failed to maintain the level of emergency services and cancer it agreed to when it bought the hospital system. Part of that lawsuit cited the consequences long wait times on emergency transport services in WNC.
Stein included affidavits from Kehler and Jones in the legal filing.
Kehler detailed some of the extended wait times McDowell EMS patients experienced in his affidavit. Some of these patients, he said, were suffering from serious medical conditions.
Jones echoed some of these thoughts in his own affidavit. He also blamed frequent turnover at the hospital to breakdowns in communication among hospital staff.
Lindell said that Mission and HCA intend to fight Stein’s lawsuit “vigorously.”
McDowell is not the only county to implement changes to its emergency services system to address long wait times at Mission Hospital. Buncombe County implemented a rapid handoff policy for stable patients arriving in ambulance. Yancey County put in place its own policy as well. Fairview Rural Fire Department is also contemplating making a change.
