NORTHAMPTON, MA / ACCESSWIRE / January 3, 2024 / Cisco Systems Inc.
By Stacy Betts

Embracing sustainability and reducing our environmental footprint has been a longstanding priority at Cisco. For almost two decades, Cisco has set transparent, publicly declared objectives as benchmarks, diligently tracking our progress and holding ourselves accountable. Additionally, we've developed comprehensive programs to empower customers to achieve their sustainability goals.

We understand that sustainability is a collaborative effort, and success requires leveraging our extensive partner network. Collaboration is essential, and it's through working with our partners that we foster innovation and gain support across the value chain. To this end, Cisco has developed several sustainability-focused programs that enable partners to offer customers end-to-end solutions designed with sustainability in mind, while also enhancing deal profitability.

Net zero by 2040

Cisco has embarked on an ambitious journey towards sustainability, aiming to achieve net-zero status by the year 2040. This goal has not been mere words but supported by continuous improvement and innovation across our entire business landscape. Our primary focus has been on delivering tangible, data-validated advancements that lead us closer to the realization of all our sustainability goals, ultimately culminating in our net-zero goal.

These efforts have not gone unnoticed. The approval of our net-zero goal by Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) stands as a testament to the robustness of our plan, the allocation of resources, and the soundness of our strategic approach. This validation confirms our determination to truly meet these targets, helping to forge a path towards a more sustainable future.

As for our partners, whether you are just starting this journey or already investing, there are four key Cisco programs to consider, through which we work together to meet our sustainability objectives.

Earn Your Cisco Environmental Sustainability Specialization

Launched in 2022, the Environmental Sustainability Specialization (ESS) equips partners with Cisco-specific sustainability knowledge. It covers key sustainability terms, the technology behind our Sustainable Solutions, Cisco's commitment to a circular economy, and supporting programs. Only one person in the company needs to complete this training and exam. For others in the partner organization, we have additional efforts to educate partner sellers on these topics. If you're not the one going through formal training, we'll summarize the partner programs you should leverage in this blog.

Leverage the Cisco Takeback & Reuse Program Plus Incentive

Cisco's Takeback and Reuse program is integral to CEO Chuck Robbins' commitment to reclaim 100% of customer gear at no cost while providing partners with discount incentives. This program is an important step towards a circular economy, ensuring the responsible end-of-life management of returned equipment, with a remarkable 99.9% material recycling or reuse success rate.

Partners benefit from this initiative through a stackable discount of up to 7% on Refresh deals, applied to new equipment when replacing older gear. To learn more, visit our Takeback and Reuse Program page. Please note that this incentive is exclusively available to partners with ESS certification and program enrollment, so ensure your company is specialized to take advantage of it.

Strategically Position Cisco Refresh

With Takeback products, we seize the opportunity to remanufacture gear based on their life stage, making them available through the Cisco Refresh program. This refurbished gear supports the circular economy, meeting rigorous quality and performance standards, and is readily available with no lead times. It's cost-effective and environmentally friendly, and has a lower carbon impact than purchasing newly manufactured products. Explore available products on the Cisco Refresh list - the more we take back, the more we can offer!

Utilize Cisco Green Pay

Cisco Green Pay, through Cisco Capital, offers a flexible payment plan for solutions designed with sustainability in mind, covering hardware, software, and services with a set contract term. At term's end, Cisco reclaims the hardware to support the circular economy, helping support a more sustainable lifecycle. Cisco's ownership guarantees gear return, providing a consistent refresh cycle and benefits akin to the Takeback program. All of this is offered to the customer, requiring minimal effort from partners. Plus, customers receive a 5% discount when opting for Green Pay.

Let's Get Started Helping the Planet Together!

Ready to begin? First, become specialized under the ESS and enroll in the Takeback Program. Inform your Cisco team of your interest. We have partner sustainability certified to assist you in integrating sustainability into your sales approach and boosting your confidence in discussing your customers' sustainability goals. Prepare for these conversations by researching your customers' public sustainability goals on their websites.

Although we've made progress in reaching our sustainability goals, we recognize that much more work needs to be done to ensure that people and ecosystems can thrive together on a livable planet. There's no time like the present to get started.

For further information, visit our Environmental Sustainability Products and Solutions webpage or consult your Cisco team for specialist guidance.

Many professionals earn certifications to help navigate their career paths. According to the IT Salary Report, 92 percent of information technology professionals have at least one certification.

Best Cisco certifications

Cisco Systems is a market leader not only in networking and communications products, but also storage networking and solutions for data centers. Cisco offers a variety of certifications for IT professionals, ranging from entry level credentials to expert-level exams.

These certifications prepare professionals for Cisco-related careers. A search of job boards reveals thousands of open positions for Cisco experts, underscoring the continued relevance of these skills. Some of Cisco’s certifications include the following:

Best Dell certifications

Dell Technologies remains one of the world’s leading computing companies. In addition to its well-known hardware lineup, Dell also offers solutions for networks, storage, servers, gateways and embedded computing, as well as a broad range of IT and business services.

Becoming certified in Dell products can help make IT professionals competitive in engineering roles for server, virtualization, networking, systems, integration and data security. Additional roles include consultants, account executives, system administrators, IT managers and deployment managers.

Best mobility certifications

In the mobile era, it has become increasingly important for network engineers to support local, remote and mobile users, as well as provide proper infrastructure. The focus on application and app development now leans more toward mobile environments, requiring security professionals to thoroughly address mobility from all perspectives.

Due to the fast-changing nature of mobile technology, not many mobility certifications have become widely adopted. However, a few of the top mobility certifications can help IT professionals stand out in this rapidly evolving field.

If part of your job includes selling and implementing an IT solution, you may want to pursue the best sales certifications. You’ll show your organization that you’re willing to go above and beyond to reach sales targets.

Best computer hardware certifications

As remote and computer-based work has become more common, it’s more important than ever that businesses and individuals be able to maintain their hardware. While discussions about potential computer-related jobs often revolve around software work and coding, jumping into the IT field by becoming a computer technician is an excellent starting point.

Today, thousands of hardware technician jobs are available across the country. Entering this industry becomes more accessible for those who acquire computer hardware certifications. These certifications can showcase your expertise and proficiency in the upkeep of computers, mobile devices, printers and other hardware components.

Best Google Cloud certifications

IT pros with solid cloud computing skills continue to be in high demand as more companies adopt cloud technologies. Today, Google Cloud is one of the market leaders in the cloud computing space.

Regardless of where you are in your IT career, engaging with certification programs can demonstrate your willingness to keep on top of rapidly evolving cloud technologies. To that end, Google has introduced a host of certifications for its cloud platform, including the following:

Best evergreen IT certifications

In the fast-changing world of technology, it can help to focus on certifications that have stood the test of time. “Evergreen” refers to certifications that remain popular year after year.

The top evergreen certifications are based on latest pay surveys in IT, reports from IT professionals about certifications they want or pursue the most, and those that appear most frequently in online job postings. Obtaining these credentials is one step toward ensuring that your skills remain relevant for a long time:

Best IT governance certifications

IT governance provides structure for aligning a company’s IT with its business strategies. Organizations faced with compliance rigors always need experienced IT pros who can see the big picture and understand technology risks. This means certified IT governance professionals are likely to remain in high demand.

Earning one of the following certifications proves a commitment to understanding the role of IT governance and its position in a company’s current and future success. Getting certified can validate your expert knowledge and lead to advanced career opportunities.

Best system administrator certifications

An IT system administrator is responsible for managing and maintaining the information technology infrastructure within an organization. The position demands sought-after career skills, ranging from configuring and maintaining servers and clients to managing access controls, network services, and addressing application resource requirements.

If you’re in charge of managing modern servers, there’s a long list of tools and technologies that system administrators must master. Obtaining some of the most prominent system administrator certifications can demonstrate your mastery to potential employers.

Best ITIL certifications

ITIL, or Information Technology Infrastructure Library, was developed to establish standardized best practices for IT services within government agencies. Over the ensuing four decades, businesses of all types embraced, modified, and extended ITIL, shaping it into a comprehensive framework for managing IT service delivery.

The ITIL framework remains the benchmark for best practices in IT service and delivery management, offering certification programs that cater to IT professionals at all levels. These training and certification courses ensure that IT professionals stay well-prepared for the ongoing evolution in IT service delivery management. There are four certifications in the ITIL certification program:

Best enterprise architect certifications

An IT enterprise architect is responsible for designing and managing the overall structure and framework of an organization’s information technology system. Enterprise architect certifications are among the highest that an IT professional can achieve; fewer than 1 percent ultimately reach this level.

Enterprise architects are among the highest-paid employees and consultants in the tech industry. These certifications can put IT professionals on a path to many lucrative positions. The average worker earns over six figures annually. Some top enterprise architect certifications are listed below:

To become an enterprise IT architect, you’ll need knowledge of systems deployment, design and architecture, as well as a strong business foundation.

Best CompTIA certifications

CompTIA is a nonprofit trade association made up of more than 2,000 member organizations and 3,000 business partners. The organization’s vendor-neutral certification program is one of the best recognized in the IT industry. Since CompTIA developed its A+ credential in 1993, it has issued more than two million certifications.

CompTIA certifications are grouped by skill set and focus on the real-world skills IT professionals need. Armed with these credentials, you can demonstrate that you know how to manage and support IT infrastructure.

Best Oracle certifications

A longtime leader in database software, Oracle also offers cloud solutions, servers, engineered systems, storage, and more. The company has more than 430,000 customers in 175 countries.

Today, Oracle’s training program offers six certification levels that span 16 product categories with more than 200 individual credentials. Considering the depth and breadth of this program — and the number of Oracle customers — it’s no surprise that Oracle certifications are highly sought after.

Vendor-specific certifications address a particular vendor’s hardware and software. For example, you can pursue Oracle certifications and Dell certifications to become an expert in those companies’ environments.

Best business continuity and disaster recovery certifications

Business continuity and disaster recovery keep systems running and data available in the event of interruptions or faults. These programs bring systems back to normal operation after a disaster has occurred.

Business continuity and disaster recovery certifications are seeing a healthy uptrend as new cloud-based tools grow in popularity. While business continuity planning and disaster recovery planning have always been essential, they’re becoming more critical than ever — and IT certifications are following suit.

The A-level test results are out in the UK. Over 350,000 teenagers have been placed on undergraduate courses, according to UCAS, the organization that manages applications to UK full-time higher education courses. And while they jump for joy, excited at the prospect of going to university, some social commentators and education critics are harrumphing.

They feel that despite their success, these exam-savvy youngsters are woefully ill-prepared for the real world. And that the ones who go to university are simply entering outdated institutions that don’t prepare them for the world of work.

Most university courses aren’t vocational. Yet, the debts that mount up throughout a course (an average of £50,000) are forcing students to create a “personal brand” and a portfolio of work before they leave – so that they have a chance of competing in a crowded marketplace once they graduate.

In the past, students were only expected to step-up their writing, thinking and analytical skills while at university. Now, they’re expected to take Instagram-worthy internships and use social media to network their way to success. They’re expected to document their skills and capabilities across a range of social media so that they can effectively secure work opportunities.

A report from the Department of Education showed that in 2017, graduates and postgraduates had higher employment rates than non-graduates. And that the average, working-age graduate earned £10,000 more than the average non-graduate.

So good, so far. But this emphasis on securing work is contributing to a hole in their university life. This manifests as poorer quality practicing and writing skills on the essays they write throughout their course. And the writing they do in the business world. This is not new. And it’s not down to youngsters spending more time on Snapchat than perusing the abridged works of Shakespeare. But it’s a skill gap that doesn’t seem to be closing.

Many arrive at university after years of teachers “teaching to the test”. Students haven’t necessarily been given the opportunity to think for themselves. At least, not in an academic sense. Their teachers have been judged on results throughout their teaching careers. So, their primary task hasn’t been to help students to write fluently, or accurately. In fact, while 26.4% of exams scored an A or A*, just 1.8% of English language exams were graded A*. Overall, the teachers have done their jobs, which has been to get their pupils to pass. And the overall pass rate for 2018 sits at 97.6%.

But when school leavers get to university, many will find themselves in a quandary. It’s likely that they’ll feel a pressure “to get their money’s worth”. Yet, they’ll also be faced with a barrage of new concepts and theories. And they may not have the writing skills to communicate them effectively. Ironically, this can hamper their chances in the job market.

A Royal Literary Fund report called “Writing Matters” labeled the writing skills of students “shocking” and “inadequate”. What’s more, an academic survey cited in this report found that 90% of lecturers said it was necessary to teach writing skills to students. Yet, university is structured so that the teaching of writing skills is not embedded into courses. It’s a veritable chicken-and-egg situation.

In any case, qualifications alone don’t sell themselves anymore. So, students need to see themselves as a package, not as a vessel for their test results. They need to hone their soft skills – their ability to think well, write well, be emotionally intelligent and communicate with themselves and others.  Employers want to hire people who are creative, resourceful and resilient.

So, as students crack open the prosecco and celebrate their results – I say we give them a break. Going to university is a massive life transition in itself, as is starting work for the first time. It’s easy to forget the days when you couldn’t boil an egg. And it’s easy to forget that it’s the system itself that isn’t teaching students the writing and communication skills they need to truly succeed in life and work.

Cisco Provides Partners A Path To Drive CX With New Success Insights Platform

Cisco’s new platform will give channel partners more visibility and tools to track customer success, a process that has been a heavy lift for some solution providers, Cisco partners tells CRN.

Cisco is backing up its program to reward partners that drive superior customer experiences with a new Success Program Insights platform that tracks customer success for channel partners.

“We’re trying to give our partners the same level of visibility, insights and actionability that we give our own internal customer success resources and provided to them so that they can take those actions,” said Anisha Sivakumar, vice president of Customer Success Management for Cisco.

Customer Success Insights – which was unveiled at Cisco Partner Summit- will tell partners where their customers are in the adoption lifecycle. “It’ll tell them how long a customer has been stuck, what their perceived renewal risk is, and then it starts to give the ability for partners to tell us where they want to lead,” Sivakumar said.

[Related: Cisco Partner Program, Specializations Revamp Arm Partners With Cross-Architectural Selling Muscle]

The pay-off is dramatic for partners committing to the Customer Insights platform, Sivakumar said. She said businesses engaged in customer success are using 114 percent more of a solutions’ features and their rates of renewals are 1.74 times higher compared to those that aren’t engaged with customer success.

The new telemetry platform comes as some partners struggled to meet requirements to obtain lucrative customer experience rebates.

“It‘s gotten better,” one Cisco partner that asked not to be named said of the telemetry data that’s being made more accessible to partners. “I think as Cisco started shifting their business to software and as a service, they saw the need for this. I think it’s just finally started evolving and becoming a lot more usable for the partners that take advantage of.”

Before the Customer Insights Platform, there were problems tracking business outcomes with customers and meeting the tight submission deadlines that Cisco requires in order to receive the rebates, solution providers told CRN.

The Success Insights Platform could provide a big boost to partners striving to comply with a new Cisco customer success certification program - a requirement for all Cisco Gold partners as of Jan. 1, 2022.

Cisco said the Success Insights Platform – part of its new customer experience (CX) and partner experience (PX) portfolio -- will boost revenue by strengthening client solution provider relationships and driving better and faster business outcomes for partners.

Denzil Samuels, Cisco’s vice president of global CX Partner Practice, joined the company in January to help Cisco partners build successful practices around customer experience.

“We’ve created the organization, we’ve invested for the last several months in digital interfaces with [Partner experience] PX Cloud and CX cloud, we’ve spent a lot of time with a number of partners in limited availability tests, running pilots, developing use cases, developing case studies, and then turning that into best practices and rolling that out,” he said.

In CX Cloud, Cisco’s “one-stop” that combines Cisco expertise and best practices with telemetry, AI/ML-driven insights, use cases, and contextual learning, there are about 400 companies a day logging in, with each company having on average five users. Cisco employees have access to about 75 demos a day going on inside CX Cloud, Samuels said.

“A large number of partners today that are using CX and PX Cloud are actually giving us great feedback on the insights. We’re capturing that, tweaking and changing it putting it back into the use case. So, there’s a lot of work that has been going on behind the scenes for several months,” he said.

Cisco is easing the process of customer buy-in for partners by relying on telemetry to pull in data from the customer environments, Samuels said. “In every single pilot we’ve been running where we’ve had to approach the customer to get [consent to opt-in to data-sharing] there’s been there’s been very little resistance,” he said.

Once logging in to CX Cloud, there’s a 90 percent retention rate, Samuels said. “There’s been significant adoption and it’s been basically widely accepted.”

Cisco Channel Chief Oliver Tuszik, for his part, said the new Success Insight Platform will be critical to help partners deliver better business outcomes for customers. “On our journey to shift to the full lifecycle, this is one of the missing pieces,” he told CRN.

Cisco has implemented a number of programs over the years to try to offset some costs for partners to drive superior customer experiences, such as lifecycle incentive funds. Cisco’s Tuszik said that his team is working alongside the Customer Experience team to address the different needs of partners managing the entire lifecycle for their clients. He said that effort that will be ongoing.

“No matter what kind of partner you are, if you’re a partner that was never focused on the lifecycle and you just want to get support, you will get it from Cisco,” he said. “Or, if you are a partner that has been in this business for a long time and you might have more experience at Cisco, you will get the underlying support to managers,” he said. “At the end, it’s very clear, our number one target is to create the best customer experience and whatever we need to do to support, motivate or incentives our partners, is what we are going to do.”

The programs that Cisco is offering today are helping to offset the cost to the partner associated with developing a customer success practice, said another Cisco partner that requested anonymity. The Cisco partner’s organization saw the way the market was changing, as were its customers’ IT buying behaviors.

“We knew that if we didn’t have these people, processes and tools, it would put us at risk of not winning that deal, or renewal, or deal expansion. I think it has paid off for those partners who did, but it‘s been an evolution of Cisco becoming more partner-focused in that space and giving us the tools and the access,” the partner said.

If solution providers can look at customer experience through a more long-term lens, the approach can be lucrative, the Cisco partner added. “The upfront investment into this type of program -- it can be a burden if you‘re not looking at it right.”

Cisco’s Ragusa-McBain: 5 Ways To Drive Success In The ‘New Normal’

‘[The pandemic] gave everybody an opportunity to pause—a forced opportunity to pause and really rethink, reimagine your people, your processes. And the way you go to market,’ says Michelle Ragusa-McBain, Cisco’s Provider Elevate leader of the Global Partner Organization.

ARTICLE TITLE HERE

Cisco’s Michelle Ragusa-McBain (photo by Shane Snider)

Michelle Ragusa-McBain likens the Cisco partner ecosystem to a flock of geese flying in formation—each member has a role to play and watches out for the other. In a world transformed by the COVID-19 pandemic, Ragusa-McBain said it is important for everyone to understand their roles.

Ragusa-McBain, Cisco’s Provider Elevate leader of the Global Partner Organization, spoke Monday at The Channel Company’s XChange 2022 event in Denver. The Channel Company is the parent company of CRN.

She contrasted some data points from major research firms with how MSPs and the larger tech community are responding. The pandemic has spawned a cumbersome supply chain snarl yet has boosted technology demand and altered the way companies think about remote work. The changes have presented challenges and opportunities.

“Today, I want to talk about five tips to help you generate and drive success in this new normal,” Ragusa-McBain said. Her talk centered around five main points backed by data gathered from Cisco and other companies.

And solution providers and MSPs were there for the message. Mike Shook, president of 5S Technologies in Apex, N.C., said Cisco’s partnership is extremely important to his business and he was glad to hear the message. “I thought it was wonderful,” Shook said. “The fact that Cisco is really empowering their managed services portfolio providers to be profitable and providing them with a wonderful product set to go to market is just so important to us.”

CRN highlights the top five messages from Ragusa-McBain’s discussion.

‘Blue Ocean Opportunities:’ The SMB Market Expansion

Ragusa-McBain touted the opportunities for partners going after SMBs.

“The SMB space has more rich opportunities than ever before,” she said. “Every company today is a tech company—manufacturing, health care, finance restructuring—we’ve seen tremendous growth and acceleration in this wonderful space. And we’ve seen no sign of it slowing down. It makes up 65 percent of all employment and there’s a $610 billion market there,” she added.

“And when you look at the opportunities, we see that these people in the SMB space have this unique opportunity … in becoming more of a tech company. But we don’t have the right people or technology to help them do that. They depend on you managed service providers, the trusted advisers … to help them on that journey.”

Ragusa-McBain said Cisco saw 46 percent growth year over year in the SMB market and that growth is translating to gains for MSPs, which saw “double-digit” growth in the same market. “We’re driving a lot of revenue with the partners who are working with us,” she said.

The Perfect Storm: Supply Chain

Supply chain issues were top of mind for many partners at the event. And Ragusa-McBain addressed the issue with a message of hope for those facing months of backlogs spawned by the pandemic, inflationary pressures and geopolitical forces.

“So, yes, it is getting better,” she said. “The good news is we’re not supply-constrained as much as we were. It wasn’t just Cisco that had this impact. Unfortunately, some of our great demand was magnified by the fact that we have a supply chain problem. The good news is that, for you, this is showing some resolution.”

There likely will be some major supply chain relief by the fourth quarter and beyond, she said. “We knew that this was an issue, and we worked diligently to try to fix it,” she said. “I’m very happy to say that we’re working toward a resolution.”

Another bright side, she said, was the opportunity for both Cisco and its channel partners to focus on more subscription-based opportunities. “What COVID did do to us was very interesting. It gave everybody an opportunity to pause—a forced opportunity to pause and really rethink, reimagine your people, your processes. And the way you go to market. What are the technologies? How are you implementing them?”

The Future Of Work

Ragusa-McBain also talked about the future of work and future workers and consumers. She noted that researchers suggest that in the next five years 75 percent of the workforce will be millennials. “What does that mean for you? When they become decision-makers, the SaaS startups and all of the companies that are being built?” she asked. “Who influences them? And is your company present in that ecosystem?”

She pointed to some best practices with companies and social media practices that resonate with newer generations of tech users who “look for up to eight pieces of content before they even talk to a salesperson.”

She also pointed to the latest trends in car buying as an example. “Consumers have access to more information to make more informed decisions than ever before. Those are the shoppers you are dealing with now,” she said. “That genie is not going back in the bottle.”

Double Down On Security

Security is becoming a greater issue as attackers are becoming more sophisticated and attacks are becoming more profitable and damaging to businesses. “There is a cyberattack every 39 seconds,” Ragusa-McBain said, citing Cisco-backed research. “And there was a ransomware attack every 14 seconds. The average cost for damage from cybercrime is about $1 billion [per year]. Cybersecurity attacks will cost the world an annual excess of $10.5 trillion by 2025.”

She said Cisco is taking the threat seriously. “We said, ‘What can we do now?’ Let’s look at our partners today. And we learned 27 percent of partners did not align to any security framework. And 50 percent of our partners had cybersecurity insurance—the other 50 percent did not.”

She pointed to significant investments Cisco has made in the security space to help partners offset damages from security breaches. “So we really want to make sure that we‘re looking at verifying and making sure that we’re keeping our whole company safe and protected from the ground up,” she said.

Ragusa-McBain also extolled the power of community—the ecosystem of channel partners is important to Cisco and its future, she said. “Cisco has always been partner-first,” she said. “I am here to make sure that we enable your success and that we listen. …We want to make sure that we’re not doing things in a vacuum.”

Cisco’s main goal is to enable partner profitability. “We want to help you get more money. And we want to help enable your success,” she said.

SLU LAW Recognized for Bar test Success

Saint Louis University School of Law was recently featured on TaxProf Blog as being ranked 7th in the nation in a latest study identifying which law schools add the most value to ultimate bar passage rates for their students.

The three-year study looked at the ultimate bar passage rate performance of 186 ABA-approved law schools for the period of 2017-2019. SLU LAW’s ranking reflects its overperforming predicted expectations for ultimate bar passage based on the undergraduate GPA and LSAT scores of incoming students.

A group of law students study together at the Vincent C. Immel Law Library in Scott Hall.

SLU LAW also recently posted its highest first-time Missouri bar passage rate in over a decade, with 94.6% of its first-time takers passing the July 2023 Missouri bar exam.

On the work done by SLU LAW to prepare students for the bar exam, the Director of Academic and Bar test Success, Antonia Miceli said, “This ranking, along with our latest Missouri bar test pass rate, is a reflection of so many things that make SLU LAW special - hardworking and dedicated students, faculty who apply a truly student-centered approach to their teaching, and a robust and comprehensive academic and bar test success program that supports students from the summer before their 1L year clear through passing the bar exam. I am so proud to be a part of the SLU LAW community and to play my part in helping our students and alumni achieve their ultimate goal of becoming licensed attorneys.”

How To Raise Money To Grow And Scale

Raising capital is harder than ever and investors need to be captivated by the underlying purpose driving your business, according to a former Cisco C-level executive and venture capitalist who aims to disrupt the IT networking market status quo, backed by $125 million in funding.

“Every dollar invested will be scrutinized, demanding you to paint a larger picture about how your vision aligns with clear business priorities of your target audience,” says CEO Pankaj Patel of Nile, a relatively new enterprise networking and IT infrastructure as-a-service company.

Nile was formed in 2018 by cofounders Patel (former Chief Development Officer at Cisco) and John Chambers (former CEO at Cisco), who have worked together for nearly 25 years as one of the network industry’s most powerful leadership duos. In the fall of 2022 Nile announced plans to disrupt the networking industry.

In a latest videoconference interview, Patel offered this advice to companies of any size who want to find investors to fund growth:

Have a clear vision from the start: it is crucial for your success. “At Nile, we have maintained our vision since day one, but adjusted how we present our solution,” said Patel. We faced the choice of targeting to become a leader in an existing category or creating a brand new market segment altogether. Rather than forcing ourselves into a noisy market, we decided to boldly establish our own category and write our own story.”

Unlock success through effective communication. “I deeply empathize with engineer founders who may struggle with effective communication,” said Patel. “I have also heavily relied on my technical expertise in the past. But reflecting on my time at Cisco, I discovered a common thread among successful leaders: they had mastered the art of communication. Their ability to convey their strategy with precision increased their team’s effectiveness across the company and accelerated their professional growth.”

Build an unbeatable go-to-market dream team. “While a strong technical team is necessary for success in the early days, you also need multidisciplinary leadership to grow at an effective pace,” said Patel. “I ventured into the business side of the house as I managed fast growing teams, got to participate in Cisco’s acquisition of other companies and evaluated investments while at JC2 Ventures.”

Expand your horizon: look beyond traditional VCs and the US market. “In addition to traditional venture capitalists (VCs), it's crucial to prioritize strategic investors who can offer additional value for your startup next to financial support,” said Patel. “They frequently facilitate valuable connections with customers, and open doors to new go-to-market partnerships.”

Patel will address these issues and more as a keynote speaker at the third annual Growth Summit, sponsored by the Executive Next Practices Institute at UC Irvine Beall Applied Innovation on August 10, 2023. Patel will be joined by about 100 California CEOs discussing how to grow in this challenging economic climate.

“By having a clear vision, proving your value, communicating effectively, assembling a dream team, and thinking globally, you might get one step closer to building your own empire,” said Patel. “We will all be rooting for you.”
