Avaya is hitting the refresh button on its Edge Channel Partner Program with the goal of fueling sales growth across both premises-based and cloud communications. While the move to the cloud is on many customer road maps, solution providers are serving customers at all different points of the cloud migration journey. Hybrid communications is a big focus for Avaya this year, and the company wants all of its partners to have equal access to growth opportunities. Avaya has been busy integrating feedback from its existing partner base to Excellerate the Edge Channel Partner Program, Carl Knerr, Avaya's global director of channel strategy and programs, told CRN. That includes implementing a simplified incentive structure with increased rebates and benefits for all partner types, including large VARs, solution providers serving the midmarket and small businesses, and systems integrators. [Related: CRN Interview: Avaya Channel Leader On Breaking Down Barriers To Growth After Bankruptcy] The Avaya channel program has three tiers based on revenue achieved—Emerald, Sapphire, and its top level, Diamond. Avaya wants to bring on new partners, especially at the Emerald level. "We do a lot of business with our Diamond partners, but they struggle a little with growth," Knerr said. Bringing on new partners that cater to smaller customers could help open the door for more cloud solutions sales, he said. Avaya does the majority of its sales through the channel—upward of 80 percent—but knew it needed to make it easier for partners to work with the company. That's why the Edge program now features nine commission rates, a dramatic reduction from its 126 possible rates of the past. Partners will now know ahead of time what their commission rate will be, and the program overall is easier to digest, Knerr said. "The program was unnecessarily complex," he said. "If partners can’t connect behaviors to dollars, we're not going to be successful." To go deeper with Avaya, the program is also offering a customer rebate program that pays a partner for adding a new service, such as unified communications or contact center, to an existing customer account, and that account is treated by Avaya as a new customer. Avaya, based in Santa Clara, Calif., emerged from Chapter 11 bankruptcy in December 2017 after selling off its networking business to Extreme Networks. Since then, the unified communications provider has been focused on partner recruitment and growing cloud-based communications sales. Hitting Avaya's revenue targets for born-in-the-cloud solution providers has been difficult because cloud revenue rolls in each month, rather than offering one large, up-front payment for partners. With that concern in mind, Avaya introduced Cloud Integrator, which allows partners to "gem up" to the Sapphire or Diamond level of the channel program based on the number of cloud seats sold. "This allows our cloud partners to compete on more even footing with our existing partner community," Knerr said. Avaya is also providing support to help partners "talk cloud" with their customers, as well as help shifting from an up-front revenue model to a monthly recurring revenue model, he said. The company is accomplishing this by giving partners who make a cloud sale one up-front payment, as well as monthly recurring payouts. "We believe this will really help partners make that transition to a monthly recurring growth model." The move, indicated in an internal memo from Avaya's top brass obtained by Channelweb.com and later confirmed by a spokesperson from Avaya, dispels rumors that Hackney would exit the company following the successful acquisition of his Nortel unit by Avaya. According to the memo, which is from Avaya President and CEO Kevin Kennedy, Hackney's official title will be senior vice president and president of Avaya Government Solutions and Data. Hackney's role will be to oversee the combined government-focused organizations within Avaya and Nortel, and he will also lead efforts to integrate Nortel's data businesses with Avaya. The memo, in which Kennedy congratulates the Avaya senior management team for "positive energy" during the acquisition process, also confirms that Wes Durow, Nortel Enterprise vice president of global marketing, will join Avaya as vice president of marketing, reporting to Todd Abbott, Avaya's senior vice president and president, field operations. Further, Kennedy names more than 20 Nortel executives, from areas like supply chain, R&D, unified communications and product quality, who will be joining Avaya after the closing. Kennedy also states in the memo that Avaya has received a 96 percent acceptance rate from the Nortel employees to which it has offered jobs, and combined with Nortel Government Solutions, that means more than 5,900 Nortel employees are set to join Avaya. Spokespersons from both Nortel and Avaya confirmed Hackney's move. Avaya was announced on September 14 as the winning bidder, for $915 million, of Nortel's enterprise business. On Wednesday of this week, the acquisition received approval under the Investment Canada Act -- one of the final OKs Avaya needs to finish the acquisition. It means that Avaya has now cleared regulatory review hurdles in the U.S., Canada and the European Union, and expects the acquisition to be completed by the end of December. Nortel filed for bankruptcy in January 2009, and the sell-off of Nortel has continued apace throughout 2009, with various business units sold or in the process of being sold to not only Avaya but also Ericsson, Kapsch, Ciena and Hitachi. Kennedy's memo does not disclose anything about the Avaya-Nortel combined product roadmap, which is a key concern of both Avaya and Nortel VARs, and was top of mind at Avaya's 2010 Americas Partner Conference in Nashville this past October. At the conference, Avaya's channel management assured VARs that the transition would be as smooth as possible and that the Nortel acquisition would help Avaya reach a goal of being 85 percent direct sales by 2012. Solution providers contacted by Channelweb.com Thursday were tentative, at best, on their endorsement of Hackney's new role. On the government side, Nortel partners acknowledged the challenges of transitioning to Hackney and away from Chuck Saffell, Nortel Government Solutions chief, who was well respected in the channel. Saffell was not listed on the Avaya memo detailing executives from Nortel who were moving to Avaya. "He's [Hackney] got big shoes to fill. Chuck Saffell had an organization that was extremely loyal to him," said Stuart Chandler, president and CEO of Optivor, an Ellicott, Md.-based solution provider. "Hackney is going to have to make sure everyone knows they can trust him." A solution provider who asked to remain anonymous was less charitable toward Hackney's new role, choosing to lump him in with departed CEO Mike Zafirovski. (Zafirovski stepped down from Nortel in August following a failure to turn the telecom giant's fortunes around through an effective restructuring.) "I have no confidence. None," the solution provider said of Hackney. "He was part of the Mike Z. crowd that couldn't turn the ship around. He hasn't worked with the federal sector under Nortel and it is a different animal. It's a purely sales and services entity and a different role." The product roadmap remains an immediate concern to solution providers. Optivor's Chandler expressed concern about Avaya's distribution relationships. "Avaya has a closed partner model and they want us to sign up with a closed distributor," he said. "I'd like to see them embrace Nortel's existing distributors and allow us to continue to work with the ones we're currently working with. I've never seen a closed model work all that well. With Avaya absorbing a few hundred million deployed lines, the closed model is going to be very problematic." Solution providers agreed overall that now that Avaya has cleared regulatory hurdles in its pursuit of Nortel, they hope for a clearer, more explicit message from Avaya on both the channel and the products. "We get all our information from leaks and on the street," said a solution provider. "They gave a partner briefing a few weeks ago, and it was basically the complete party line. How do they work?Students enrolled in an array of first-and second-year courses have the option of enrolling in a Peer-Guided Study Group alongside the course. Study Group participants meet weekly in groups of about 5 to 7 with a peer facilitator — another student who has taken and done well in the course (or, in some cases, an equivalent course). In the two-hour meetings, students talk through key concepts from the course, ask questions on points of confusion and help answer one another’s questions, and work through practice problems or exercises together. The Study Groups are highly collaborative, comfortable environments where undergraduates can learn from one another and help one another succeed. Semaglutide treatments such as Ozempic and Wegovy have been shown to reduce the symptoms of alcohol use disorder (AUD), according to a study published in The Journal of Clinical Psychiatry on Nov. 27. The collaborative study from The University of Oklahoma (OU) and Oklahoma State University (OSU) found a “significant and noteworthy decrease” in the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT) scores of six patients who were receiving semaglutide treatment for weight loss. Lead study author Dr. Jesse Richards, director of obesity medicine and assistant professor of medicine at the OU-TU School of Community Medicine, said the study was inspired by his conversation with Dr. Kyle Simmons, professor of pharmacology and physiology at the OSU Center for Health Sciences. “I had been hearing from a significant number of patients that their alcohol intake was spontaneously decreasing while [they were] on the medication,” Richards told Fox News Digital. As a bariatric surgery clinic employee, Richards noted that it’s standard to screen patients for alcohol use. At the clinic, a number of patients tested positive for alcohol consumption, sometimes in concerning amounts. Later, while on semaglutide medication, they reported reduced alcohol intake. One of Richards’ patients — who previously drank large amounts of alcohol — shared a new inability to drink more than two cans of beer now because it “just doesn’t sound good.” This response piqued Richards’ interest in learning more about patients’ aversion to alcohol, which directly correlated to his research. Research has shown that this effect is “mediated through adjustments in the reward pathway in the brain,” he said. “The GLP-1s are actually modifying dopamine, decreasing the craving and decreasing the motivation to acquire things in that compulsive intake category.” The most surprising takeaway from the study, Richards said, was that the same significant treatment response was seen even at very low doses. “We found that even patients on the lowest dose of semaglutide — a quarter milligram — had a quite significant and relatively … quick onset reduction in alcohol intake,” he said. Of the six patients studied, all but one were on low doses — from a quarter to a half milligram. “And that’s very encouraging because we know that the lower doses of these medications are tolerated much better,” said Richards. While the results seem promising, the doctor said he does not recommend that patients use semaglutide treatments for alcohol use disorder at this time, due to supply and safety issues. “If patients have [obesity and diabetes] indications for the medication and they also struggle with alcohol intake … having them on this treatment may potentially be beneficial,” Richards said. “But because there has been a global medication shortage, and because we don’t have prospective trials and don’t know what the specific safety is versus the well-established safety data in obesity and diabetes, [I] would not recommend it just for patients who have AUD.” There are three FDA-approved drugs available for alcoholic use disorder that are currently underused, the doctor noted. Given that five million people in the U.S. are currently taking semaglutide medications, if it is proven that those drugs have a significant effect on alcohol use disorder, “by default, they are going to become the most widely used drug to Excellerate these symptoms — just by virtue of the fact that so many people are on them for diabetes or obesity,” Richards noted. He confirmed that additional research is underway with two ongoing trials. “Since we were able to show clinically meaningful reductions in alcohol intake and AUD symptomatology in a real-world setting, that bodes very well for these types of medications,” he said. Looking ahead, Richard said there is a need for higher-quality evidence of the medication’s impact on AUD compared to placebo drugs or environmental factors. Even though it’s unclear whether GLP-1 producers will market the medication to AUD patients in the future, Richards said this could become an “established medical practice once the safety and efficacy has been determined.” For patients who struggle with AUD, Richards recommended they talk to their health care providers about available treatment. He also alerted patients that if they experience a reduced appetite and usually consume “a bunch of calories” in alcohol, it may be necessary to look into a more balanced diet.
