https://killexams.com/exam_list/MicrosoftMicrosoft gives up on its Mixed Reality VR for Windows
The virtual reality market is in a bit of a holding pattern at the moment. After a mild splash from the Meta Quest 3, everyone is holding their breath to see how Apple’s ambitious and wildly expensive Vision Pro headset will fare. But Microsoft isn’t waiting to throw in the towel on its VR and AR efforts. The Windows Mixed Reality platform is being officially depreciated — that is, no longer actively developed — as of December 2023.
Windows Mixed Reality debuted along with the ambitious Microsoft HoloLens headset in a technical demo in 2015 and with the augmented reality hardware releasing to developers the following year and full software integration coming in Windows 10’s Fall Creators Update in 2017. Despite high hopes and heavy investment from Microsoft, HoloLens never got a consumer release and saw limited interest from industrial customers aside from a notable contract with the US military. While several demos of the hardware and similar headsets using its design have been impressive, the practical applications have been lacking.
While the VR “metaverse” appears to be a bust, at least as imagined by Microsoft and Meta, Windows Mixed Reality’s combination of VR and AR may have been ahead of its time. Augmented reality is the main new feature for the Meta Quest 3, which has full-color pass-through cameras designed to integrate play sessions with the real world. Ditto for the Apple Vision Pro, which is so dedicated to the idea of users wearing the headset constantly that it simulates their eyes on an external screen.
According to Microsoft’s support page (spotted by Windows Central), the Mixed Reality Portal and Windows Mixed Reality for Steam VR will be removed in future Windows releases. Users who still wish to access Windows Mixed Reality can still do so, at least for the moment.

It’s over for Windows Mixed Reality. In an update to a list of deprecated Windows features, Microsoft added Windows Mixed Reality, along with the accompanying Mixed Reality Portal app and Windows Mixed Reality for Steam VR.
The company says Windows Mixed Reality is “deprecated and will be removed in a future release of Windows.” Microsoft first introduced Windows Mixed Reality in 2017 as part of its bid to compete with virtual reality rivals like HTC and Oculus (now owned by Meta).
Windows Mixed Reality served as a portal to games, apps, and other experiences within the VR space. In addition to the Microsoft HoloLens, other companies, including Acer, Dell, Lenovo, Asus, HP, and Samsung, made mixed reality headsets compatible with Microsoft’s platform. It doesn’t look like the enterprise-focused HoloLens 2 is going anywhere for now, though, as Microsoft added a free Windows 11 upgrade and several other improvements for the $3,500 headset earlier this year.
Thu, 21 Dec 2023 00:31:00 -0600entext/htmlhttps://www.theverge.com/2023/12/21/24010787/microsoft-windows-mixed-reality-deprecatedMicrosoft is killing its Windows VR platform — announces deprecation of 'Windows Mixed Reality'
Microsoft has added Windows Mixed Reality to the list of features it is deprecating in Windows.
The company says support for Windows Mixed Reality devices will be removed in a future version of Windows.
This includes support for SteamVR using Windows Mixed Reality VR headsets.
Microsoft has announced that it is deprecating Windows Mixed Reality, with plans to remove the feature in an upcoming release of the OS. Windows Mixed Reality was Microsoft's attempt at building out a VR ecosystem for Windows PCs, but unfortunately this effort has been mostly inactive for a number of years.
While there have been several VR headsets built for Windows Mixed Reality, most of them launched between 2017 and 2021. It's been a long while since OEMs released new VR headsets for Windows Mixed Reality, likely because SteamVR is a much more successful platform with a much wider selection of games.
Unfortunately, Microsoft says the deprecation of Windows Mixed Reality also includes support for using a Windows Mixed Reality headset with SteamVR, along with the dedicated Mixed Reality Portal app which acted as a launch environment for VR apps and games built for Windows Mixed Reality.
HoloLens 2 is Microsoft's only surviving "Windows Mixed Reality" device, however even the HoloLens product has gone through turbulent times recently. It's clear that Mixed Reality at Microsoft is a dead venture, with HoloLens 3 being canceled and no current plans to ship a true successor. Even Xbox is uninterested in VR.
It's fair to say the writing has been on the wall for Microsoft's VR platform for many years. The company went all in on VR and Mixed Reality devices just 5 years, but has now given up on that venture. It's a shame too, because some of the Windows Mixed Reality devices were actually pretty good, and some made VR relatively affordable.
The HP Reverb G2 was the most exact Windows Mixed Reality headset, which got a surprising refresh in 2021. Outside of that, we've not had any Windows Mixed Reality headsets ship from any OEM since 2019.

The Windows Mixed Reality platform helped some hardware devices and software to access augmented and virtual reality technologies. The tech giant has now updated its list of deprecated Windows features which also shows that Mixed Reality Portal app and Windows Mixed Reality for Steam VR app are also being shut down.
In 2017, the company launched the feature in a Windows 10 update to take on virtual reality rivals like HTC and Oculus (now owned by Meta). The mixed reality portal app allowed users to access the technology on their personal computers with the use of compatible VR headsets. Microsoft said: “Windows mixed reality is deprecated and will be removed in a future release of Windows.” Windows Mixed Reality: Key highlights Windows Mixed Reality acted as a portal to games, apps and other experiences inside the VR space. Apart from the Microsoft HoloLens, other companies, including Acer, Dell, Lenovo, Asus, HP, and Samsung, made mixed reality headsets compatible with Microsoft’s platform. However, the enterprise-focused HoloLens 2 is expected to be available. Earlier this year, Microsoft rolled out a free Windows 11 upgrade and multiple other improvements for the $3,500 headset, reports The Verge.
Microsoft’s mixed reality Microsoft uses mixed reality to describe software that combines both augmented and virtual reality. Augmented reality overlays text, sounds, graphics and video on real-world images that users see in front of them. Meanwhile, virtual reality immerses users in an artificial world by creating computer-generated experiences. Microsoft has been gradually downsizing its VR division. According to a Business Insider report of 2022 the company scrapped plans for HoloLens 3. This move may have been the stepping stones towards ending the company’s augmented reality headset line. In 2022, HoloLens boss Alex Kipman also quit over allegations of sexual misconduct (reports The Verge). Later, the company announced 10,000 job cuts and most of the affected workers worked for Microsoft’s mixed reality projects. It also includes the company’s now-discontinued AltspaceVR app. Thu, 21 Dec 2023 22:59:00 -0600entext/htmlhttps://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/gadgets-news/microsoft-kills-its-mixed-reality-dreams/articleshow/106195676.cmsMicrosoft Quietly Announces the End of Windows Mixed RealityNo result found, try new keyword!Despite being "the next big thing" for going on a decade, virtual reality just can't get a foothold. Windows Mixed Reality is heading to a farm upstate. Microsoft is shutting down the platform, according to an official list of deprecated Windows features. This includes the garden variety Windows Mixed Reality software, along with the Mixed Reality Portal app and the affiliated Steam VR app. The platform isn’t gone yet, but Microsoft says it’ll be “removed in a future release of Windows.”
Microsoft first unveiled Windows Mixed Reality back in 2017 as its attempt to compete with rivals in the VR space, like HTC and Oculus (which is now owned by Meta.) We were fascinated by the tech when it first launched, as it offered the ability for in-person shared mixed reality. The pricey Apple Vision Pro could offer a similar experience when it presumably launches in February.
Microsoft’s platform was ultimately adopted by several VR headsets, like the HP Reverb G2 and others manufactured by companies like Acer, Asus and Samsung. The Windows Mixed Reality Portal app allowed access to games, experiences and plenty of work-related productivity apps. However, it looks like the adoption rate wasn’t up to snuff, as indicated by today’s news.
Despite the imminent end to the platform, it doesn’t look to be impacting Microsoft’s other mixed-reality ecosystem, the HoloLens 2. Microsoft added a Windows 11 upgrade and other improvements for the business-focused headset earlier this year, according to The Verge. It also started shipping them out to the Army for combat tests. Yes. You read that last part right.
However, not everything’s rosy in HoloLens land. Reports indicate that Microsoft has stopped development on the HoloLens 3. A report in 2022 said that the company teamed up with Samsung to make an unannounced mixed-reality device, but Microsoft spokesperson Frank Shaw said that Microsoft remains "committed to HoloLens and future HoloLens development."
Additionally, Microsoft has made sweeping cuts throughout its VR division, leading to layoffs and the discontinuation of the AltspaceVR app. The company is, however, still developing its proprietary Mesh app that lets co-workers meet in a virtual space without a headset.
Thu, 21 Dec 2023 02:16:00 -0600en-UStext/htmlhttps://www.yahoo.com/entertainment/microsoft-is-nixing-its-windows-mixed-reality-platform-161607566.htmlMicrosoft ends the AR category it created and leaves mixed reality to Apple
Microsoft is saying “adios” to Windows Mixed Reality as the tech giant has plans to deprecate the platform from Windows 11 and Windows 10.
The shutdown also includes the deprecation of the Mixed Reality Portal app as well as Windows Mixed Reality for SteamVR and Steam VR Beta. It’s unknown exactly when the tech will be pulled. The Deprecated Features page on Microsoft’s Learn website states they'll “be removed in a future release of Windows”, but that’s it. To be perfectly honest, the end of Windows Mixed Reality is not a surprising move as it has been a long time coming. As TheVerge points out in their coverage, Microsoft has been “downsizing its VR division” for some time now.
Alex Kipman, head of the HoloLens team, left the projects after misconduct allegations came out. Plus, Microsoft laid off 10,000 of its employees earlier this year, many of whom worked on virtual reality products. That side of the company hasn’t been doing well for a while now.
Staying in VR
Despite this, Microsoft is not giving up on virtual reality, focusing on other projects. Microsoft Mesh, for instance, was added to Microsoft Teams back in May 2023. This allows workers to interact with each other in 3D space using personal avatars. Although given the negative response to Mesh, we wouldn’t be surprised if it also bit the dust some day soon.
More recently, select Microsoft Office suite and Xbox Cloud Gaming have made their way to Meta Quest headsets. For the former, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint are the only ones available for download. The others, like Outlook, remain missing at the time of this writing. For Xbox Cloud Gaming, do be aware that it is in a beta state. You may run into some performance issues.
However, in our experience, the app runs quite well. Playing an Xbox game on the headset in an immersive environment was a blast. Using the Quest handsets can make certain titles more difficult since they have a limited array of buttons. We recommend connecting a controller to bypass this.
Paving the way for others
Even though Microsoft helped create the "mixed reality" concept, other companies are picking up the slack with more traditional VR headsets like the Meta Quest Pro and HTC Vive Pro, both of which feature pass-through vision capabilities that put VR in your real world. But it's Microsoft's old rival Apple that's generating the most excitement with its new Vision Pro mixed-reality headset. The Vision Pro is slated to be the next big thing to hit the VR scene. It sports a pair of micro-OLED displays with each one outputting 4K resolution. Earlier demos reveal you can play over 100 games or watch 3D movies via a floating screen.

(MENAFN- IANS) San Francisco, Dec 22 (IANS) Microsoft has announced to discontinue "Windows Mixed Reality" feature in an update to a list of deprecated Windows features.
Microsoft also added the Mixed Reality Portal app and Windows Mixed Reality for Steam VR to the list.
"Windows Mixed Reality is deprecated and will be removed in a future release of Windows. This deprecation includes the Mixed Reality Portal app and Windows Mixed Reality for SteamVR and Steam VR Beta," Microsoft said in a blogpost.
Microsoft first released Windows Mixed Reality in 2017 to combat with virtual reality rivals such as HTC and Oculus (now owned by Meta). It served as a gateway to games, apps, and other experiences within the VR space.
Microsoft has been reducing the size of its VR division over time.
The head of HoloLens, Alex Kipman, left last year after allegations of sexual misconduct.
Later, the company eliminated 10,000 jobs, which affected many workers involved in Microsoft's mixed reality projects, such as the now-discontinued AltspaceVR app.
Meanwhile, Microsoft has partnered with Suno, a leader in artificial intelligence (AI)-based music creation, to bring their capabilities to its AI-powered chatbot Copilot, allowing you to create personalised songs with a simple prompt.
"Through this partnership, people will have at their fingertips the ability, regardless of musical background, to create fun, clever, and personalised songs with a simple prompt," Microsoft said in a blogpost.
