Sometimes you just want to escape the increasingly insane world out there into an action movie. Netflix has made a few of their own, but the bulk of the best action films on their service are still Hollywood blockbusters from ‘90s modern classics to more recent box office hits to films that may have slipped under your radar. From Ridley Scott to Michael Mann, here are the best action movies currently on Netflix.

Matt Reeves now owns the saga of the Dark Knight as a sequel to this March 2022 action blockbuster has already been announced. Dropping on HBO Max while it was still in theaters and now unleashed into the rest of the streamers, The Batman is an ambitious epic reboot of the legendary hero, anchored by Reeves’s craft and fascinating performances from Robert Pattinson, Zoe Kravitz, Paul Dano, and many more.

You would remember if you have because director Timo Tjahjanto is a maniac, a madman who choreographs and shoots action scenes like no one else in the world right now. He returned in late 2022 for his Netflix original about a group of assassins who are forced into action when someone kills their mentor. It’s kind of like a live-action Looney Tunes with bazookas.

It feels like this movie was actually a bigger hit on Netflix, where it popped up in the top ten for weeks after it dropped in December 2022. It makes sense because it’s the perfect fit for when you’re looking for something to turn your brain off to for a couple hours. Brad Pitt stars as an assassin who ends up on a train filled with fellow assassins, and, well, things get expectedly violent. It’s a goofy movie, but it works on Netflix.

Hot on the heels of the DIY movie that made him a star, El Mariachi, Robert Rodriguez basically remade that indie hit with a bigger budget in this 1995 action flick that stars Antonio Banderas in the title role. He’s a musician who sets out to get vengeance against the drug lord who killed his lover. It also features a breakthrough performance by Salma Hayek.

The directorial king of the smart blockbusters released another one in 2021 in his highly acclaimed adaptation of the Frank Herbert novels, which premiered on HBO Max along with theaters for a brief window on its way to massive worldwide acclaim and success. Timothée Chalamet stars in this sci-fi epic that was actually the most Oscar-winning film of 2021, taking home six trophies. Part Two was delayed until 2024 because of the strike, but the first half of this story is on Netflix to make the pain easier to take.

Adam Wingard (The Guest) directs this ultimate team-up between titans and he brings a playful glee to the entire project. It’s a B-movie on a A-budget — consistently ridiculous but also nonstop fun — and it really delivers in terms of “understanding the assignment.” Wingard knows that these movies need to be larger than life escapism and that’s exactly what he delivers.

Alfonso Cuarón’s Oscar winner has rarely been on streaming services so take this chance to watch this sci-fi masterpiece while you can. Yes, it plays best in theaters, but it’s a movie worth watching in whatever manner possible.

Have you ever wanted to see a movie that replicated the feel of playing a first-person shooter video game? Then Hardcore Henry is the one for you. The plot doesn’t really matter—there’s something about experiments and lost memories and whatever—as this is all an exercise in style. Writer/director Ilya Naishuller straps viewers into the perspective of his increasingly powerful hero and then unleashes him on enemies who want to stop him. At its peak, it’s got some adrenaline-pumping lunacy that’s admirable.

The phenomenal Jonathan Majors stars in this stylish Western with tons of attitude, memorable characters, and brilliant set pieces. He’s joined by Idris Elba, Zazie Beetz, Regina King, Delroy Lindo, Lakeith Stanfield, Danielle Deadwyler, and many more in a film that feels like it will become bigger as its incredible cast become acting legends.

Robert De Niro and Al Pacino star in one of the best movies of the ‘90s, a stunning cat-and-mouse game between a career criminal and a workaholic cop. The book release of Heat 2 in 2022 brought a lot of people back to this movie, one that has held up remarkably well over the nearly three decades since it was released. It’s a masterpiece.

Actually, all of the first three films in the series about the assassin who destroys worlds when his dog gets murdered are on Netflix, just waiting for the excellent fourth film to join them. Have a marathon and admire the incredible stunt choreography and charismatic leading man work from Keanu Reeves. There’s not a bad film in this franchise.

You’ll want to watch it twice.

The great Lawrence Kasdan co-wrote and directed one of the best Westerns of its era, a film with a rock-star ensemble of young ‘80s actors. Silverado stars Kevin Kline, Scott Glenn, Danny Glover, and Kevin Costner in the lead roles and they’re ably assisted by an incredible supporting cast that features Brian Dennehy, John Cleese, Jeff Goldblum, Rosanna Arquette, and Linda Hunt. This is a smart, funny Western that has stood the test of time.

The Daniel Craig era of James Bond has come to a close and so now history can look back and appreciate his entire run. Is the best film of his five the centerpiece? Arguably. This epic unpacking of the history of 007 is gorgeously shot by Roger Deakins and perfectly directed by Sam Mendes. It features a strong villain performance from Javier Bardem and great supporting work from Albert Finney and Judi Dench. Heck, it even has a killer theme song.

Bong Joon-ho became a household name (at least in cinephile circles) when he won the Oscar for Parasite, but he had a hit before that in this 2013 sci-fi action flick starring Chris Evans, Song Kang-ho, Tilda Swinton, Octavia Spencer, and John Hurt. It’s a brilliant allegory for society as a train has been divided into classes per car, and the peasants form a revolt. Visually striking and narratively ambitious, this is a film that only seems to grow in esteem with each passing year, especially now that Bong is increasingly famous.

What a gift to Netflix subscribers for this to already be on the service so soon after playing in theaters and landing on Blu-ray. This is how you do a big-budget blockbuster sequel, developing the themes of the first movie and setting up the stake for what now appears will be one of the best trilogies in superhero history. Packed with so much detail and creativity, it’s a film you’ll want to watch over and over again.

One of the most underrated Netflix originals, this early 2019 film was written by Mark Boal (The Hurt Locker) and directed by the man who helmed Margin Call. The great ensemble here includes Ben Affleck, Oscar Isaac, Charlie Hunnam, Garrett Hedlund, and Pedro Pascal in the story of a group of former U.S. soldiers who plan and (poorly) execute a heist in South America. This is an old-fashioned action movie with a great modern cast.

One of the biggest movies of the last decade is a Chinese film that most people in the United States haven’t even seen. Making almost $700 million worldwide, this is the kind of blockbuster that the MCU kind of pushed out — a crazy, end-of-the-world disaster movie with a Roland Emmerich aesthetic and ridiculous special effects. It’s almost overwhelming in its onslaught of crazy but sometimes you just want to see things go boom on a massive scale. Note: There’s a sequel in theaters now that will hopefully be on Netflix soon too.

If you’ve been wondering whether the Assassin’s Creed franchise has gotten “too big” in terms of scale and scope, you’re not alone. The games used to be smaller and more focused, and people enjoyed them that way. However, it got complicated when they started to go “beyond the bounds” of a few cities.

But here’s where the good news comes in, Assassin’s Creed Mirage has “return to form.” You’ll play as the assassin Basim, who resides in Baghdad. You’ll run on the ground and in the upper reaches of buildings to get around the city just like before and uncover a destiny that will change the brotherhood forever. Everything in this game is smaller than what you seen in the past couple of installments. You won’t be spending countless hours here. Instead, think of this game in the similar vein as the original installments of this beloved franchise.

#17 Wanted: Dead

But don’t let the name fool you, their missions is to figure out and take down a large corporate conspiracy that is trying to control the city and its people.

To figure out the truth, you’ll have to go through leagues of mercenaries, gangs, and even former military, all with a brutal mix of martial arts, weapons, and guns to strike them down with. Weave through combat how you will and finish people off with over 50 brutal moves. It’s your job to find the truth, so do that.

#16 Minecraft Legends

Minecraft! It’s already made like a zillion dollars and is now the best-selling game of ALL TIME, does it really need to “expand itself” anymore than it already has? We don’t think so, and neither should you.

Regardless, the game will focus on a “new yet familiar world” and have you taking more of an action RPG approach this time around instead of just “building everything you ever wanted”. You’ll get to traverse the world and seek out allies both expected and unexpected as you wander around and figure out the mysteries of where you are.

It’s not meant to be deep, but it might be fun, so why not?

#15 Aliens Dark Descent

The Aliens franchise is another series that has tried to adapt to the realm of video games as best it can, and so far…it’s done pretty well…overall. Isolation was the best game in that line, but with Aliens Dark Descent, you’ll have a new take on the franchise that will test your limits.

Because you will be in command of a group of marines dispatched to a moon to take down the Xenomorphs that are there. But they aren’t the only threat that you’ll have to deal with, as there are rogue operatives there trying to defeat you, as well as new monster threats.

You’ll need to build up your squad and command them with precision if you’re going to make it out alive.

#14 The Lords of the Fallen

The Lords of the Fallen is a reboot slash follow-up to 2014’s Lords of the Fallen. This soulslike action RPG was a hit with fans of dark fantasy and brutal combat alike. So, it’s pretty exciting news that a new instalment of the game is set to launch at some point next year. The Lords of the Fallen will build on the themes of the original game, with the action taking place in the dual realms of the living and the dead. Traversing these deadly worlds as Dark Crusaders will be a core component of the gameplay, so there’ll be plenty of action to be had fighting off monsters in the bowels of these parallel lands. The Lords of the Fallen will also have online co-op functionality, meaning players can bring a companion on their journey through the hellish realms that await.

#13 Scars Above

Scars Above is a new third-person action shooter that looks like it’ll satisfy those who love their sci-fi. Set in an unknown, mysterious alien world, the game focuses on survival and problem-solving. As protagonist Dr Kate Ward, players must explore a strange exoplanet and discover what happened to the rest of their crew. Scars Above will have plenty of thrilling enemy encounters and boss fights, but there’s also plenty of exploration-based action to be found in this game. Crafting weapons and gadgets and learning how to fight, survive and understand the new life discovered in this hostile new environment will be key parts of the experience. With a richly designed world full of creepy new creatures to deal with, Scars Above should prove a hit with those who love a mysterious storyline in amongst their action.

#12 Dead Island 2

There’s certainly a lot of action to be had in Dead Island 2. The zombie apocalypse has never looked so exciting, or brutal. The action in this instalment of the Dead Island franchise will take players to the sunny climes of Los Angeles. Surviving and thriving during a zombie outbreak is no easy feat, of course, so players will be able to explore the playstyles and storylines of six different characters during their gameplay. The game will feature not just improved graphics, but a story that is different in part than before, and the gameplay mechanics has been refined, giving you another go at saving the president’s daughter from a bioterriosm organization. #5 Final Fantasy XVI

#4 Star Wars Jedi: Survivor

Set five years after the events of the first game, Star Wars Jedi Survivor sees Cal trying to do all he can to defeat the Empire and prove they’re not invincible. But new events will make him question his place in the galaxy and reunite him with old friends along the way.

Enjoy the classic style of lightsaber battles from before, mixed in with some new techniques, Force powers, and more. The galaxy far, far away has never looked more beautiful and has never been this expansive. So wander around and see what it has to offer you!

#3 Starfield

You’ll take to the stars and enjoy a storyline that’ll have you making various choices that can affect what you do and where you go next. Or you can simply venture into the universe they’ve created so you can see all there is to see.

Players will slowly pull back the curtains of the universe, but we’ll refrain from spoiling anything here. Just like other Bethesda games, you’ll have plenty to explore, characters to meet, and quests to partake in.

#2 Marvel’s Spider-Man 2

When a good game comes around, you KNOW it’s a good game, or a great one, or even a legendary title that everyone should play because it’s just how the world should be. Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 by Insomniac Games was that title in many ways for many people.

The game kind of was announced out of nowhere, and was meant to be “Marvel’s answer to Batman”, and it was for the most part. Insomniac delved deep into Spider-Man’s roster and made sure that the game FELT like one where Spider-Man was actually swinging around New York, with a very large New York to swing around at that!

The follow-up to Insomniac Games’ massive hit on PS4, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 will continue the adventures of Peter Parker and Miles Morales. Now a unified “Spider Unit,” the two seek to protect New York City from numerous threats.

Such as what? Well, the arrival of Kraven the Hunter will put them to the test. He’s seeking the ultimate challenge and wants nothing more than to test himself against the Spider-Men and see if they’re worthy of the hunt.

But that’s not all! The Symbiote will get its claws into Peter, and Venom will soon emerge! Will the two be able to withstand the might of the Symbiote and the Hunter?

But if you’re going into this game to enjoy the action, you’ll have plenty to satisfy you. Once again, Link will have numerous weapons he can pick up on the go to fight off hordes of monsters. But in a twist, he can make them stronger via the “Fuse” ability! You can turn arrows into bombs or use certain jellies to freeze enemies solid, and that’s just the beginning of the possibilities! You can also merge things with your shield so that your defensive weapon can be offensive too! For example, you can attach a flamethrower to it and burn enemies as you defend against their attacks!

Takashi Miike has directed over 100 movies, and this is one of the best, a stylish throwback to samurai cinema of old anchored by the modern filmmaking prowess of one of the best filmmakers alive. A remake of Eiichi Kudo’s 1963 film, this is loosely based on genuine events from 1844 when 12 samurai and a hunter worked together to assassinate the leader of the Akashi clan. It’s a perfect balance of storytelling and sprays of samurai blood.

Animated action! Anyone who thinks a Japanese anime film from the ‘80s doesn’t deserve a spot on this list simply hasn’t seen Akira, a movie that feels more influential with each film that copies its template. Based on the 1982 manga of the same name and set in the oh-so-distant future of 2019, this story of a biker with telekinetic abilities has influenced dozens of action and sci-fi project. It gets better every time you watch it. (Note: Both the dubbed and subtitled versions are on Hulu.)

Nicolas Cage leads one of his best ensembles in this hit about a plane full of convicts that gets hijacked. Of course, Cage plays the “good criminal,” a guy sentenced to ten years for defending his pregnant wife. He finds himself the only possible savior on a plane full of real bad guys that includes John Malkovich, Steve Buscemi, Ving Rhames, and Danny Trejo.

Yes, the script here gets a little clunky and cribs a bit too much from other sci-fi films, but history is going to come around to The Creator for one reason: It looks stunning. Gareth Edwards’ film will find an audience in the future. Get on the bandwagon early.

Giant sharks + charismatic actors = something worth watching on Hulu. It’s been fun to watch this B-movie guilty pleasure build a following in the quarter-century since its release. It’s so popular still that there was a cheap sequel released not that long ago. It’s the story of genetically engineered sharks who attack people played by Saffron Burrows, Thomas Jane, LL Cool J, and Samuel L. Jackson, who has (spoiler!) one of the best death scenes in the history of action movies.

Also known as Live Die Repeat, this is one of the best video game movies even if it’s not technically a video game movie. It’s about a guy (Tom Cruise) who respawns every time he dies, taking what he learned from the previous attempt to try and defeat an alien race. That’s kind of how video games work. This movie rules, partially because it also includes a fantastic Emily Blunt supporting performance.

How did it take so long for Hollywood to make this one? A clever, enjoyable B-movie, this thriller flick takes the concept of an escape room to extremes, and it ended up making over $150 million worldwide, leading to a 2021 sequel. Taylor Russell and Logan Miller lead a group of people who end up having to survive a series of increasingly dangerous escape rooms.

Robert De Niro and Al Pacino star in one of the best movies of the ‘90s, a stunning cat-and-mouse game between a career criminal and a workaholic cop. The book release of Heat 2 in 2022 brought a lot of people back to this movie, one that has held up remarkably well over the nearly three decades since it was released. It’s a masterpiece.

A massive hit when it was released, it’s already produced one sequel, with another in development. It’s a lot of fun.

The entire trilogy is on Hulu.

The film was a hit, producing two sequels, also both on Hulu.

Chloe Grace Moretz stars in this clever genre hybrid that starts as a study of sexism on a fighter plane over the Pacific during World War II and then becomes basically an alien movie. Lean and mean, this is a ridiculous B-movie, but don’t question the logic, just enjoy the ride.

Bong Joon-ho became a household name (at least in cinephile circles) when he won the Oscar for Parasite, but he had a hit before that in this sci-fi action flick starring Chris Evans, Song Kang-ho, Tilda Swinton, Octavia Spencer, and John Hurt. It’s a brilliant allegory for society as a train has been divided into classes per car, and the peasants form a revolt. Visually striking and narratively ambitious, Snowpiercer is a film that only seems to grow in esteem with each passing year, especially now that Bong is increasingly famous.

Dumped in theaters just before the pandemic broke the industry forever, this underrated thriller has already developed something of a following on VOD and then HBO Max before now sliding over to Hulu. The entire X-Universe was essentially rebooted in Matthew Vaughn’s great superhero film, one that turned the series from the somber tone of the ‘00s flicks to something more playful and fun. James McAvoy took on Professor X and Michael Fassbender stepped into the metal boots of Magneto for this smart prequel with style to spare. It’s held up well as one of the better superhero movies of the 2010s.
