Killexams : Nigerian Students Studying Abroad, Travelers To Pay N40,000 For Police Character Certificate

Nigerians travelling abroad, including students are now to pay N40,000 for Police Character Certificate (PCC), also known as Police Clearance Certificate.

This followed a new directive from the Nigeria Police high command allegedly given on July 22, 2023, directing the increase of the fee for PCC from N5,000 to N40,000.

The new fee is a 700 per cent increase from the original fee of N5,000.

Before this official hike, the real price was known as it could range range from as low as N5,000 to as high as N100,000, depending on the police officer one approaches or the individual requesting for it.

Messages sent to Force PRO, CSP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, seeking confirmation and reasons for the increase were not answered as at press time.

The PCC is a document issued by the Nigeria Police to certify that an individual does not have criminal record, criminal conviction or is trying to evade prosecution for crimes committed in the country.

The document is largely sought by individuals, mostly youths, travelling out of the country to further their studies or to take up employment, though some organisations in Nigeria sometimes request certain individuals to provide the PCC.

Students study specimens during a beach field trip near Scripps Institution of Oceanography.

The Master of Advanced Studies (MAS) degree programs equip students with the research-informed training needed to serve in influential science, policy, communication and leadership positions. The accelerated, one-year MAS degree differs from a traditional two-year Master of Science (MS) degree in that it is extraordinarily interdisciplinary, skills-based and project-focused. Our programs are designed to propel graduates into satisfying, challenging positions immediately upon graduation.

To support robust classroom discussions and enhance critical thinking skills, the MAS Programs at Scripps Institution of Oceanography welcome applicants with diverse professional backgrounds in the private sector, public sector, academia and from non-governmental organizations. Specifically, the programs are most appropriate for candidates with at least three years of experience in resource management, education, outreach, science, advocacy, economics, journalism, law or communication.

MAS in Climate Science & Policy

The Master of Advanced Studies in Climate Science & Policy (MAS CSP) Program responds to the increasing global need for scientific, policy, and communication experts to act on climate challenges concerning the future of our planet. Key areas of focus in the MAS CSP Program include the physical science basis of climate change, the impacts of ongoing climate change on human and ecological systems, existing climate politics and governance, and how to communicate climate information to key audiences.

MAS CSP students work with the world's leading climate and policy experts at Scripps Institution of Oceanography and the broader UC San Diego campus, as well as government officials in San Diego and throughout California.

Alumni hold leadership positions in government, the private sector, at NGOs, and climate organizations around the world to guide meaningful climate adaptation and mitigation strategies.

MAS in Marine Biodiversity & Conservation

The Master of Advanced Studies in Marine Biodiversity & Conservation (MAS MBC) Program trains the trailblazers of tomorrow to address the world's most pressing ocean and coastal challenges. Students learn about marine ecosystems and conservation through an interdisciplinary, hands-on curriculum in marine biology, ecology, oceanography, social justice, communication, economics, law, and policy.

MAS MBC students enjoy access to world class researchers, NOAA Fisheries scientists, and the Birch Aquarium. The program is also connected to valuable non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and community partners who are at the forefront of marine conservation issues in California, the U.S. and globally.

Alumni spearhead research, lead agencies, work with Tribes, create policy, craft effective communication strategies, direct NGOs, produce films and impact marine conservation in meaningful ways. With demonstrated success, our alumni change the way the world understands and manages its ocean resources.

Killexams : UTSA and Alamo Colleges partner with SAISD for new construction science program

JANUARY 20, 2021 — UTSA, SAISD, and Alamo Colleges District have joined forces to help further grow the education pipeline in the City of San Antonio.

Together the institutions have launched the new Construction Sciences Pathways in Technology (P-Tech) program, which will be housed at Sidney Lanier High School, located in San Antonio’s West Side community. The program will allow more students from across the community to experience UTSA firsthand and learn about its innovative fields of study.

“As an urban serving university, UTSA seeks to deepen relations within the City of San Antonio and strengthen its portfolio of instructional programs, leading to increases in college completion,” said Abel Gonzales, director for Instructional Outreach Program in the UTSA College of Education and Human Development.

“It is imperative that our discipline of construction management become known to people at a younger age.”

The new CSP-Tech program offers a track through UTSA where students in grades 9-12 can earn hours toward a bachelor’s degree in construction science and management at UTSA, or the opportunity to earn an associate’s degree in construction technology, or power generation and alternative energy through St. Philip's College.

Partnership programs like this will allow more students from across the community to experience UTSA firsthand and learn about its innovative fields of study, Gonzales added.

CSP-Tech offers Lanier’s students exposure to the construction science management field as they engage in university level coursework before graduating high school through UTSA’s Early Birds Dual Credit Program. The Early Birds program, through the College of Education and Human Development allows eligible high school juniors and seniors to earn college credit before graduation.

“The program will offer Lanier High School students academic support throughout the experience and the opportunity to complete up to 36 college or university hours prior to their high school graduation,” Gonzales said. “Our Instructional Outreach Department within the College of Education and Human Development has a strong relationship with SAISD. We believe that this initiative will allow us to develop the bridge for a seamless transition from Lanier High School into UTSA.”

The program will advance students toward the completion of their degree, saving them time and money, Gonzales said.

“We understand that even though each of us works with students at various levels of their education, we all have the same desired outcomes for students,” Gonzales said. “We want each of our students to be successful in their future education, and want to pave the way towards the completion of their educational goals. This program will allow students to access UTSA’s Downtown Campus, which is a gateway to San Antonio's West Side neighborhood.”

By partnering with local K-12 schools, Gonzales added that it will lead to improving success for all.

“The P-Tech program at Lanier High School is a truly collaborative partnership that will expand access to UTSA from within the West Side San Antonio community,” he said.

The goal of the construction science program is to prepare all the students to graduate with the necessary skills, certifications, and hands-on specific training necessary to be successful within the industry, said Shelby Parker, coordinator for CSP-Tech, at a latest virtual press conference.

“After graduation, our students will have the professional and academic skills required to either enter the careers or continue in their education,” Parker said. “This program would not be possible without the guidance and support from our higher education partners from St. Philip's College and UTSA.”

The UTSA track in the new CSP-Tech was organized in partnership with the Instructional Outreach Program in the College of Education and Human Development and leadership from the Department of Construction Science in the College of Architecture, Construction and Planning.

“It is imperative that our discipline of construction management become known to people at a younger age,” said John Murphy, chair of the Department of Construction Science at UTSA. “There are amazing opportunities for those that have high math and science skills, as well as people skills, to become leaders in constructing the built environment of the future. Creating in-roads of opportunity for high school students to seamlessly start their path through a university degree program in construction science and management at UTSA is an effective way to reach out.”

The opportunities are endless to those interested and willing to commit to such professional education, Murphy added.

CSP-Tech at Lanier High School will start in the fall for the new school year. Applications are open now for Bexar County students entering the ninth grade this fall.

Killexams : 2 teens killed in head-on crash in Castle Rock

CASTLE ROCK, Colo. (KDVR) — A two-vehicle crash in Castle Rock that occurred shortly before midnight on Friday night left two teenagers dead and several others needing treatment.

Officials with Colorado State Patrol said that the two vehicles involved in the head-on collision were a Toyota SUV and a Honda pickup. CSP said the crash happened near Interstate 25 Frontage Road and Territorial Road.

The Honda pickup had four 17-year-old students from Castle View High School in the pickup at the time of the crash and, according to CSP, the only one wearing a seat belt in the pickup was the driver.

CSP said that the driver of the Honda pickup attempted to get out of the way of the Toyota SUV.

The female teenager from Larkspur was identified as Audrey Todd and the male teenager from Castle Rock was identified as Colton Bellamy. Both teens were seniors at Castle View High according to the school’s principal.

Both teens died from injuries sustained in the collision.

The other two teens, the driver and female passenger, were transported to a nearby hospital with moderate injuries.

The driver and sole occupant of the Toyota SUV, 25-year-old Ricky Avalos-Trujillo, was transported to a hospital after sustaining moderate injuries. After receiving treatment, he was taken into custody.

The principal of Castle View High School sent a letter to the community about Friday’s collision.

Dear Castle View High Family:

I am deeply saddened to share that Colton Bellamy and Audrey Todd, twelfth-graders at our school, recently died. This is a tragic loss and our hearts go out to Colton and Audrey’s families and friends. The Castle View High School and Douglas County School District communities are saddened by these losses. Please keep Colton and Audrey’s families in your thoughts.

The DCSD Crisis Team will be available to connect with students or staff who may need extra support. The team will be at Castle View High School on Monday, Aug. 8 and Tuesday, Aug. 9 during normal school hours.

In light of these sad circumstances, we will be adjusting our schedules this week. Please look for a follow up communication from us with those details later this weekend.

During this period of sadness, you may notice a variety of reactions from your child. You may find your child unusually talkative or quiet. Your child may ask a lot of questions, be anxious, or may want to be near you more than usual. You may also notice no reaction from your child. Teens can experience a wide range of feelings and behaviors that are normal when dealing with this kind of tragedy. Any of these may be signs of the need for a little extra support.

As parents, you are the very best support system in meeting your child’s needs. You can provide the best explanation that fits with your values and beliefs, knowing that other parents may share this information with their children, and informal discussions may take place between students. You may wish to have a family discussion to talk briefly about loss of life and to acknowledge any feelings that may surface. Knowing what to say to your child is often difficult. When no other words come to mind, a hug and acknowledging that this is a difficult time for everyone may provide comfort. If you need additional guidance in discussing this situation with your child, please see the attached suggestions from our DCSD Crisis Team.

Feelings can be especially overwhelming at a time like this. There is no right way to express the sadness, grief and confusion that students will feel when they encounter a tragedy. For example, students may react by needing more sleep, or being more emotional. On the other hand, a student may not react outwardly at all. Students can be particularly vulnerable if this event reminds them about another loss or sadness in their own lives.

Expect that resolving the feelings related to this tragedy may take your child some time. It is normal for a child to bring up the tragedy after it has happened and often when least expected. Our school staff is always available to support students as needed. Please let me know if you need additional resources or support.

Jeena Templeton, Ed.D., principal at Castle View High School

Avalos-Trujillo was taken into custody on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol, vehicular homicide and assault.
