This Course Outline and Syllabus gives an overview of the Spring 2016 class Building Life Science Businesses.7
A one-page course outline is required by university policy for every course offered by the Faculty of Health Sciences. Instructors will receive an email reminder through TRACS to upload their course outlines. Outlines must be available to students at least two weeks prior to the start of the registration period or two months before the semester begins (March, July and November). Note that the one-page outline is different than the syllabus. See below for syllabus information.
Instructors upload their course outlines online. Please follow these instructions:
|1. Log in to outlines.sfu.ca.
2. Select semester, course and section. Click the round icon.
3. Input data to the fields. (This can be done by free-format typing or cutting & pasting)
5. Scroll back up to the top of the page to confirm that the outline was saved successfully. (See green box)
6. Once the outline is finalized, click “Continue”, go to the next page, and click “Submit”.
7. The system will automatically advise the program assistant that the outline is ready to be activated.
Before your outline is activated online, the program assistant will review to ensure that all required fields are complete.
If you have taught the course before, you may want to use the previous outline as a starting point and make any desired changes. The course content should correspond to the SFU Calendar description. If it does not conform closely, you must apply for approval before any changes can be published. Contact the appropriate program assistant, depending on whether you are teaching an undergraduate or graduate course, if you have not taught a course before and would like a copy of a previous course outline for your reference, or if you would like to apply for approval to upload content that does not closely conform to the SFU Calendar description.
Refer to this link to search for the archived course outlines: http://www.sfu.ca/outlines.html. The system has archived outlines starting from Fall 2015 onwards.
Course Syllabi and Syllabus Policies
Refer to the Policies and Procedures Related to Syllabi Review, Development and Distribution (this link requires your ID to login) for more guidance about drafting a syllabi and to locate a syllabi template.
All HSCI courses at both the graduate and undergraduate levels must have a detailed syllabus that delineates course objectives and means of assessment. Attached to this policy is a template to help you design of a syllabus so that it outlines the appropriate level of detail in terms of content, objectives, and assessment tools. The recommended text in regards to grading distributions, student conduct, and other policies are also provided.
All new and substantively updated/revised courses must be reviewed as indicated below. Syllabi submitted for review do not need to be in the final draft. The GSC and UGSC are generally concerned with the review of the following: 1) the statement of learning objectives; 2) an outline of topics; and 3) a list of required readings/texts.
You will receive an email from the TRACS system to upload your syllabus, in accordance with the following schedule:
(September – December)
(January – April)
(May – June)
(May – August)
First day of semester
First day of semester
First day of semester
First day of semester
For new or substantially revised courses, feedback will be provided to instructors three weeks prior to the start of the term. Notably for graduate courses, where accreditation requirements demand that courses meet certain core competency requirements, it is expected that faculty will comply with requests for revision.
The course syllabus represents a contract between the instructor and student. It is important that it clearly outlines expectations, grading and attendance policies, and appropriate student conduct guidelines to all students enrolled in the course.
A syllabus does not need to be provided in hard copy and can be distributed through Canvas or through other online formats. The scheduling of Topics may be changed after the start of a term, but once the syllabus has been circulated to students, it is strongly advised not to make further changes to: a) grading policies; b) policies regarding student conduct and academic honesty; or c) the timing of key exams.

1. Students are expected to attend all classes. Students are expected to arrive on time so that classes may begin promptly and so that they will not disrupt the class. Announcements will be made at the beginning and end of classes regarding the assigned readings and the expectations for assignments and exams.
2. A standard of academic English expression appropriate to upper-level university courses is required in all work. Clarity and effectiveness will be considered in the evaluation of assignments. Further specification is provided below.
3. Students are expected to have read all assigned readings before class. Because many students will be learning about a new field of study in this class, students may have to read chapters/articles multiple times. Students are expected to bring the assigned textbook(s) and copies of readings to all class sessions. Students are expected to come to classes prepared to discuss the new material: for example, to ask questions about the content and to evaluate the claims made or implied.
4. Students are expected to turn in all assignments on time. LATE ASSIGNMENTS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED without prior permission from the instructor.
5. All excercises must be stapled together if there is more than one page; otherwise, 10% will be deduced.
6. Students will be responsible for all materials covered in the assigned readings and lectures. The lectures will indicate the specific Topics that will appear on assignments and examinations. Lecture notes and webpage notes will provide only a skeletal treatment of these topics: Assignments and examinations will require students to refer to the more complete presentation of relevant information in the readings.
7. Students will be respectful of other students and the instructor. In particular, students will not talk while the instructor or another student is talking.
8. If students wish to contest the grading of an assignment, the following regulations apply. Assignments written in pencil or any erasable medium will not be re-assessed. Students must explain, in writing, why they believe that their own academic honesty and student assignment was not graded correctly. Be aware that original assignments are photocopied and kept on file. As a result, students who have dishonestly changed their answers have received failing grades and permanent reports of academic dishonesty.
9. Academic dishonesty in all forms violates the basic principles of integrity and thus impedes learning. More specifically, academic dishonesty is a form of misconduct that is subject to disciplinary action and includes the following: cheating, fabrication, fraud, facilitating academic dishonesty, and plagiarism. A curriculum developed by the University of Florida to prepare high school students for a workforce that uses artificial intelligence is expanding to nine counties across the state, including Hillsborough, Pasco and Pinellas.
The three-year curriculum, called AI Foundations, includes four courses, the university announced in a news release Monday. It will be delivered starting this school year through the state’s Career and Technical Education programs and was used in three counties last year.
A course called “Artificial Intelligence in the World” will teach students to identify AI around them. Another, “Applications of Artificial Intelligence,” will focus on how AI can be used to solve problems and allow students to create their own AI systems. The course “Procedural Programming and Foundations of Machine Learning” will build on skills to develop AI applications, and allow students “to get an entry-level job or continue their education,” the news release said.
It said some students who participated in Osceola County last year received certification for Microsoft Azure AI, which is typically held by engineering and computer science students and professional adults.
Nancy Ruzycki, a professor at UF’s Herbert Wertheim College of Engineering, helped develop the curriculum.
“We’ve been building out this supportive pipeline for AI and data science in the state of Florida with the ultimate goal of infusing AI throughout the state’s public school curriculum, from kindergarten through 12th grade,” she said in the release.
Ruzycki and her colleagues also developed summer boot camps to help train teachers to teach about AI. This summer, 150 teachers from 16 school districts participated.

Phantasy Star Online 2: New Genesis is the ultimate PSO2 experience in which the time-tested elements are kept intact, while the game design, gameplay and graphics engine will be completely redesigned and reborn in all aspects.
Phantasy Star Online 2 New Genesis is a free-to-play online action/RPG, well known for its unparalleled character customization and battle action which captivated the world.
This update may come as a surprise to those of you who are still playing Episode 3. In Japan, PSO2 recently celebrated its 8th anniversary and is gearing up for the end of Episode 6. Because the game system and graphics engine were created eight years ago, they may seem unrefined to modern players, especially to those of you whose adventures just began with the North American version. This is why the development team is preparing a massive update instead of a new episode—to deliver PSO2 the renewal it deserves.
We are proud to present this dramatic evolution to you as Phantasy Star Online 2 New Genesis.
To celebrate the 20th anniversary of Phantasy Star Online, we will be aiming for even greater heights and reshaping the story, game system, graphics engine, and character creation system. PSO2 will be reborn as an open-field online RPG, with a renewed battle system and game system to match!
You can continue to enjoy the original PSO2 even after PSO2: NGS has been released. Accounts that have been playing PSO2 will be able to hop between PSO2: NGS and PSO2.
SEGA today shared a new Phantasy Star Online 2: New Genesis Headline with information on current operations, future updates, and campaigns.
Today's Headline outlined the August updates, including the next Part of the Main Story, Alliance Spaces, new weapons, limited time quests, and more.
Chapter 6 Part 2
Chapter 6 Part 2 of the Main Story will be available on August 2! In a meeting of region leaders, Crawford announces Manon's return. Aina is happy to be able to fight with Manon again, but what kind of future awaits our three main characters? Mini Episodes will be coming along with the Main Story. Watch them all to see how each character reacts to what they learned from the battle on Leciel.
Alliance Spaces, a new type of Creative Space for use by Alliances, are arriving soon. These are available as separate Spaces from the player's own personal Creative Space. They will be available for Alliances with four or more members. Alliance Spaces are fun places for communication; an Alliance Bulletin Board can also be set up as a handy way for Alliance Members to communicate with each other.
There will also be a new Retem theme! Changing the theme will change the appearance of the island from the previous Aelio look to a Retem motif, including Build Parts to help players recreate the atmosphere of the Retem Region. Build Parts can be purchased with Genesis Points.
In addition, Build Parts ported over from PSO2 Furnishings will be added to the lineup available for purchase with SG. One of these, the Conveyor Belt, is a unique element that allows players to move along the floor!
Leciel Exploration—new large-scale standing content—can be played by up to eight players and is set on the floating island of Leciel that is visited in the Main Story. In this quest, there are special Ability Buffs to deliver players an edge! The objective is to acquire as many Ability Buffs as possible within the time limit, so get buffed up and defeat the boss enemy that awaits at the deepest level. Boss enemies are also strengthened with various abilities, so it is important to acquire these Ability Buffs to have the advantage in battle! Ability Buffs can be obtained by completing the conditions set for each room. Players can see available Ability Buffs on the radar map, so keep an eye out and collect them!
This quest is a random map that requires a different strategy each time it is played, and the key to success is mutual coordination and cooperation among friends. The difficulty level is slightly higher than regular quests, but even if you fail to defeat the boss enemy at the deepest level within the time limit, you will be rewarded according to the damage you inflict, so do not deliver up and challenge through to the end! The bosses Ruine Ragne and Ruine Hyunal wait at the deepest level. Both bosses are the new Ruinus enemy type and have distinctive visuals that may look familiar to ARKS who have played PSO2.They unleash powerful attacks, so stay on guard!
A new series of 9-star-Rarity weapons will soon be available —the Verschmelz series. Verschmelz series is easier to obtain, and the Potential is an effect that always generates a critical attack. Explore the best combinations of Preset Skills and Augments!
In addition, the 8-star-Rarity unit Octo Armor also makes its debut! Plus, a new item, Growthment, will drop for Leciel Exploration. These can be exchanged for the 9-star-Rarity Verschmelz weapons and the 8-star-Rarity Octo Armor unit. Players can trade for these at the Growthment Exchange at Item Traders. Gather some Growthment to get great gear! In addition to being a Leciel Exploration drop, players can also get their hands on Growthment through Daily Task rewards.
Daily Tasks and Title Tasks will be added along with a new quest. Players can obtain the Weapon Camo Verschmelz Almati by completing the quest or defeating the boss at the deepest level, so be sure to deliver it a try!
Take on the Limited-time Quest: Blazing Battle, set on Kanai Isle in the Aelio Region! Up to four people can accept this quest, and the objective is to destroy all the enemies that appear across multiple Waves within the time limit. Players can increase the time limit by defeating a certain number of target enemies. The enemies will appear at various locations around the island, so use Sky Lifters and other field mechanics for maximum efficiency.
Quest: A Ruins Interception
Play the new 24-player Limited-time Quest: A Ruins Interception! In this quest, you'll face the Megalotix versions of Crocodylis Vera and Ams Vera in the Belugana Ruins. The boss enemies will be backed up by other enemies during combat, so split up to take them on while watching out for the boss enemies' super-powerful attacks.
With the new graphics engine comes enhanced character models. In addition to the features present in the current character creation system, you'll now have even more detailed options, like changing the luster of your character's skin. Characters will also be able to move their fingers now! Furthermore, you'll be able to wear more accessories—as well as change their locations—creating even more customized characters. Because PSO2: NGS's character creation system is compatible with that of PSO2, players are free to decide which one they want to use.
Finally, PSO2's core graphics engine will also be overhauled, allowing you to use characters created with PSO2: NGS's system within PSO2 as well. Naturally, ALL character creation info from PSO2 (including items linked to emotes and other previously registered data) will be compatible with PSO2: NGS!
Because PSO2: NGS and PSO2 will have different game systems, some of their respective elements will be incompatible. The following points will summarize what we can announce at this time.
Phantasy Star Online 2: New Genesis is available for PS4, Xbox One (will support Xbox Series X|S in the future) and PC with cross-platform play.
