Killexams : Want to test your skills at being the hero? Shooters offers gun practice using computer simulations

Starting at $60 an hour, you can shoot at targets, kill a zombie, take down a home intruder or pop balloons at Shooters, Fairbanks’ first commercial indoor shooting simulator.

Hundreds of scenarios are available to include a lunchroom fight, a bank holdup, a doughnut shop robbery, a fight on a pier, a convenience store ambush, a meth lab, a trail attack, a vicious dog, a wild west shootout, a hostage situation, a fight on a train and a lobby bomber.

The business opened in April upstairs of the Roundup Steakhouse and Saloon, 2701 S. Cushman St., and is owned by friends Pete Kelly, Bill Satterberg and Craig Compeau.

“The price of ammo is kind of what was driving it,” said Kelly, a former state senator who heads up the Fairbanks Rescue Mission.

The trio pooled their money and purchased $30,000 worth of equipment, including air soft pistols, which are the weight of ordinary handguns and offer an authentic experience, including recoil. Speakers provide the sound of live fire. Air soft rifles are on order.

The business caters to military, law enforcement and novice shooters, including families, looking to hone their skills or have some fun. Since no live ammunition is involved, alcoholic beverages are allowed.

The equipment is similar to what is used by law enforcement and the military, according to Satterberg.

Josh Horner, Shooters’ operations manager, said gun safety is still a top priority. While no one can get hurt with the air soft pistols, Shooters does not want its clients to learn bad habits. Customers are taught to handle the air soft pistols as if they are loaded with real bullets.

Up to five people can shoot at the same time, and there is no limit to the number of shots.

“I keep swapping them out. I keep them rolling,” Horner said.

Jenn Yuhas is a certified firearms instructor and a big fan of getting in some practice with the air soft pistols.

“Ammo is expensive and hard to get ahold of,” she said. “This is convenient and it’s controlled. We don’t have to worry about lead exposure.

“It’s great for a safety class,” Yuhas said. “Knowing that you can’t screw up fatally takes a lot of the pressure off.”

The business offered demonstrations at The Outdoor Show in April and will be at the Go Winter! Expo in October.

Times are booked through a website, shootersalaska.com, and fees start at $60 for an hour for one person. Shooters charges $20 for each additional person. No walk-ins.

The indoor shooting simulator is available seven days a week with evening hours Mondays through Thursdays. Fridays through Sundays, they have afternoon and evening hours.

Killexams : Pocket Prep Now Offering Free Study Prep for Early Career Certifications

Popular Science started writing about technology more than 150 years ago. There was no such thing as “gadget writing” when we published our first issue in 1872, but if there was, our mission to demystify the world of innovation for everyday readers means we would have been all over it. Here in the present, PopSci is fully committed to helping readers navigate the increasingly intimidating array of devices on the market right now.

Our writers and editors have combined decades of experience covering and reviewing consumer electronics. We each have our own obsessive specialties—from high-end audio, to video games, to cameras, and beyond—but when we’re reviewing devices outside of our immediate wheelhouses, we do our best to seek out trustworthy voices and opinions to help guide people to the very best recommendations. We know we don’t know everything, but we’re excited to live through the analysis paralysis that internet shopping can spur so readers don’t have to.

What we test

Considering that every product that makes it to the marketplace has some underpinnings in science and technology, Popular Science can cover pretty much any device under the sun. That kind of freedom has its positives and negatives. We may spend one week evaluating the best solar generators, then quickly pivot to the pursuit of the best dog toys. At any given time, a gear editor’s desk might be littered with a new GoPro, a Sonos speaker, a MagSafe battery charger, some electrolyte drink mix, a steel water bottle, and an unopened doggie DNA test kit.

How we test and review products

While we cover a wide array of subjects, we always strive to treat every product and category with the same rigor that makes PopSci stories worth studying in the first place.

We typically get the gear we test on loan directly from the companies. Brands understand that sending us products to test doesn’t ensure that we’re going to cover them positively. We’re committed to offering honest, and complete (as much as possible) assessments because we know people are paying ever-increasing prices for this stuff. We take that responsibility seriously.

In some instances, we’ll check out gear as part of a pre-release media event or demo day, which companies hold to provide media a chance to evaluate multiple products on the same day. We like these showcases because they provide us a chance to see the products, without having to inflict the ecological damage that comes with shipping large, heavy items all over the country in order to put together a review.

Obviously, we can’t test everything. As a general interest publication, we would have to put our hands on a literal mountain of stuff each month. Some of our recommendations draw their inspiration from extensive research. We rely on knowledgeable writers to mix their hands-on experience with data from trustworthy editorial reviews, reliable user feedback, and straight-up spec sheet comparisons.

We typically start evaluating a product category with the widest possible net. We survey everything from the tried-and-true heavy hitter companies that rarely miss to the more obscure Amazon products offered by shadowy companies with names that appear like nothing more than six random letters. Then we narrow down our selections, attempting to try as many top picks as timing and availability allow, before finalizing the list.

Every review process is slightly different because the products all vary. Reviewing a TV is leagues apart from evaluating an air fryer. Though, it is lucky when we get to review both at once because then we can count watching Mad Max: Fury Road and eating Impossible plant-based “chicken” nuggets as work.

For some evaluations, we use tools designed specifically to make quantitative evaluations. For example, we’ll sometimes run color accuracy tests on monitors. And our audio reviewers have specific tracks they play to test out the response and performance in speakers and headphones. It’s a process made of a million processes, and we take all of them seriously.

When we decide something truly deserves special recognition after hands-on testing and hardcore vetting, we’ll provide it our Editor’s Choice badge. We’ve interacted with, trust, and genuinely like those products. In many cases, we probably own them ourselves.

Affiliate disclosure

If you see a link in our reviews content, it’s likely an affiliate link. When you click those and buy something, our partner sites may provide us a small commission on the sale. It helps support our journalism.

While those relationships do involve money, they in no way influence our opinions about products. If something stinks, we’re going to tell you about it. Then we’ll tell you about several other better options and you can buy one of those through our affiliate links. Yes, this does lead to the occasional awkward email with a company, but that’s part of the gig.

Our experts

PopSci’s Executive Editor, Gear & Reviews, Stan Horaczek has been writing about and reviewing consumer electronics for long enough that some of his earliest bylines are Engadget posts about the Motorola RAZR (great phone, by the way!). Reviews Editor Mike Epstein has been a prolific video game and accessory reviewer for years, and Associate Managing Editor Tony Ware knows so much about high-end audio that we threaten to mute him in meetings before he starts in about open-ear versus closed-back headphones for lossless audio playback. Suffice it to say: We’re nerds, and we seek out other nerds to help us on our noble nerd pursuit to pick the best stuff and recommend it to you. Here’s who we are:

Killexams : RIT Certified and Foundry collaborate on cryptocurrency course

Underserved students from the city of Rochester with a strong interest in cryptocurrency and blockchain technology recently participated in an immersive, weeklong course at RIT to learn the latest about digital currency.

A mystery to many people, cryptocurrency is a type of currency that’s stored exclusively in a digital format—not issued or maintained by a central authority like a government or bank. It’s “issued with cryptography, distributed consensus mechanisms, and economic incentive alignment,” according to Jonathan S. Weissman, a senior lecturer in computing security in RIT’s Golisano College of Computing and Information Sciences and teacher of the class.

“Digital currency is interesting to me because it’s fun learning about how it was created and all aspects related to it,” said Teresa Spivey, a Rochester, N.Y., resident who participated in Weissman’s class inside Eastman Hall. “My future plans are to learn everything I can and really find my passion for what I want to do forever. I will figure that out by learning and experiencing other classes and opportunities like this one.”

That’s exactly the mission of RIT Certified, which launched in June and aims to provide a wide range of alternative education courses, certificate programs, and skill-based learning experiences targeting people beginning their careers, changing roles, maintaining their existing job, or advancing in the workplace. RIT Certified offered the class collaboratively with Foundry, a Rochester, N.Y.-headquartered and wholly-owned subsidiary of Digital Currency Group (DCG) focused on digital asset mining and staking.

The class was the outcome of discussions between RIT Certified, Foundry, and University Advancement on how they might partner in supporting alternative pathways to training in the space of cryptocurrency and mining. The Foundry Scholars program resulted in a gift by the company to support seven underserved students this summer and 13 more next year to experience weeklong, industry-focused classes focused on the field of cryptocurrency and blockchain.

Both Foundry and RIT Certified are actively invested in career and technical education, not only for K-12 students, but for traditionally underserved populations—for whom the scholarships are targeted.

“We believe that employer-driven educational experiences for high school students will only Strengthen their ability to be successful,” said Dennis Di Lorenzo, chief business officer for RIT Certified. “A program like this brings students from communities with limited opportunities to a college campus, provides them with a college experience, and industry exposure. It’s about changing their perspective on the future of work.”

Foundry Academy Executive Director Craig Ross ’06 (telecommunications engineering technology) said the class fit “Foundry CEO Mike Colyer’s vision of Western New York becoming the center for innovation in blockchain technology.” Ross heads up the company’s new initiative to train and develop top technicians for the fast-growing bitcoin mining industry.

“Considering RIT’s reputation of academic excellence and prominence in Western New York, Foundry and RIT are a natural partnership,” Ross said. “The goal of this course was to provide an overview of bitcoin mining and cryptocurrencies to historically marginalized groups in Rochester, ultimately working to break down barriers to employment in the industry.”

“We believe that the Bitcoin and cryptocurrency industry is a hotbed for innovation, just like the Internet and mobile revolutions,” he added. “It is Foundry’s goal to ensure that all interested members of our community—no matter their socioeconomic status—can capitalize on this exciting technology and be contributing members of the blockchain revolution.”

Weissman said his course’s objectives included “students walking away with a granular understanding of cryptocurrencies and blockchains and the ability to reason about newfangled technologies.”

“I wanted to provide them the familiarity with trends and notable projects in the field and industry,” he noted, “along with the confidence to pursue opportunities for participation and contribution in the future.”

During the weeklong class, Weissman asked his students questions such as what problems do cryptocurrencies and decentralized applications help solve; where do they see themselves in this industry; and how are blockchain entrepreneurs disrupting industries now—and how might they do so in the future?

“Blockchains can be used in many different ways besides cryptocurrencies,” Weissman said. “Blockchain is often listed as one of the leading cutting-edge technologies of the future.”

Adrian Hale, director of Economic and Community Development at Foundry, said he hopes that programming like the one at RIT “provides the necessary groundwork for people interested in our industry to become familiar with the fundamentals that will enable them to grow into fully functional contributing members of a work team and the broader blockchain community.”

SALT LAKE CITY, July 27, 2022 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- The winners of the 2022 Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) and the Adobe Certified Professional World Championship have been announced by Certiport, the leading provider of performance-based IT certification exams that accelerate academic and career opportunities for learners.

In its 20th year, the Microsoft Office Specialist competition attracted more than one million contestants from around the world. Students, ages 13 to 22, competed with peers to prove their superior skills in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, culminating in the most popular technology skills competition on Microsoft Office—and the only one endorsed by Microsoft since its inception in 2002.

To enter the competition, students took a qualifying Microsoft Office Specialist certification exam to demonstrate their mastery of Microsoft Office technology. Regional competitions were held worldwide, and 95 finalists qualified to compete in the final round of competition held in Anaheim, CA from July 24-27.

In the concluding round, competitors participated in a two-part skills demonstration. The first skills demonstration was a 30-minute timed exam. The second part is an advanced three-hour research project, in which students research their given topic, formulate an opinion, and represent their conclusions and research in an asset appropriate to the competition application (Word report, Excel workbook, or PowerPoint presentation). This is the second year where finalists were required to complete a free-form project.

At the final event in Anaheim, Certiport and Microsoft recognized the top student competitors in the MOS World Championship Awards Ceremony and presented each First place winner with a $7,000 cash prize, Second place with $3,500 and Third place with $1,500.

“The pandemic put our live MOS Championship events on hold. We are so thrilled to be able to return to in-person competitions,” said Ray Murray, Vice President and General Manager, Certiport. “It is inspiring to see students from 21 countries come together to ‘speak Microsoft’. The winners receive extra praise, but every single student who entered has earned a valuable workforce credential that will help them find success in college and in their career. The last two years have highlighted the importance of IT skills for tomorrow’s professionals and it’s incredible to see so many young people get introduced to IT certifications through the MOS World Championship.”

Microsoft Office Specialist is the only official Microsoft-recognized certification for Microsoft Office globally and serves as a powerful instrument for assessing students’ skills and preparing them for real-world application of their knowledge.

“The Microsoft Office Specialist World Championship is one of our favorite events annually, because these students are thrilled to compete and they inspire all of us with their competitive spirit and crowning achievement,” said Rick Herrmann, Vice President Worldwide Public Sector, Education, Microsoft. “These students work diligently to earn valuable industry-recognized certifications, and we know that the future is bright with upcoming business and technology leaders like those we met at the MOS World Championship.”
