The four remote stack based overflow flaws affect ServerProtect for Windows 5.58, ServerProtect for EMC 5.58, ServerProtect for Network Appliance Filer 5.61, and ServerProtect for Network Appliance Filer 5.62, according to a Trend Micro advisory issued Wednesday.

Pedram Amini, manager of TippingPoint's Security Research Team, discovered the vulnerabilities and says a successful exploit would result in the complete compromise of a system.

"Since this runs as a privileged user, an attacker would have full control over the system," Amini said.

Hackers could trigger the flaws by sending a specially rigged remote procedure call (RPC) to the affected application, but the potential impact is limited somewhat by the fact that this is not a service that is typically exposed outside the network, according to Amini.

Secunia said the flaw was 'moderately critical', or three on a five-point scale, while Symantec gave the bug its highest rating of 10.

For Trend Micro, this is the third serious vulnerability to be patched in the past three weeks. Last week, Trend patched a critical stack based buffer overflow vulnerability in its OfficeScan security software, and a week earlier, the Tokyo-based vendor fixed a denial-of-service flaw in the ScanEngine component that's included in nearly all of its products.

7 best action movies of 2023, ranked

This year at the movies has largely been defined by the cultural phenomenon of comedies and dramas like Barbie, Oppenheimer, or Killers of the Flower Moon. However, the year in action has been quietly wonderful.

While this year’s action movies may not have an absolute crowd-favorite like 2022’s Top Gun: Maverick, 2023 still dashed out a handful of wonderful action flicks. The year had a variety of options for action fans, from family-friendly flicks about talking turtles to brutal gore fests featuring exploding Nazis and flaming shotgun blasts. So, whether you’re a die-hard action fanatic or a casual moviegoer, 2023 likely has something for you.

Now that 2023 is winding to an end, let’s take a look at the seven best action movies of the year.

7. Sisu

A group of Nazis stand next to 2 trucks in Sisu.
Lionsgate

Sisu is the kind of movie that die-hard action fans drool over: simple plot, cool kills. The movie from Finnish director Jalmari Helander is a wild, awe-inducing journey of literal blood, sweat, and tears through the Finnish countryside. Set in 1945, Sisu follows an ex-Finnish soldier named Aatami Korpi as he tries to venture into the city to cash in a bag of gold he recently mined. The Nazis currently enacting a scorched-earth policy on the region, though, have different ideas.

Aatami’s journey becomes an epic battle featuring flying landmines and underwater knife battles, resulting in a gritty movie whose brutal images will be remembered for a while. Sisu isn’t reinventing the genre, but it’s an efficient and well-constructed action flick worthy of a watch.

6. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem

Leonardo stands in front of his brothers in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem.
Paramount Pictures

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem is a different flavor of action movie. In fact, I won’t be shocked if readers are a bit surprised that this film made the list. However, Mutant Mayhem is more than just a kid-friendly animated movie with doses of action.

The film, which follows the Turtle brothers as they try to be accepted as normal New York City teenagers, is beautiful in its construction, introducing a refreshing new animated style that rivals Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse in terms of visual ingenuity. But the movie is also just a good time full of heart. It abounds with care and authenticity; it is unapologetic about its maturity, resulting in a fun and touching flick about acceptance and brotherhood.

5. Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves

A female and male character duck for cover in a scene from Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves
Aidan Monoghan / Paramount

In all honesty, nobody really expected a Dungeons and Dragons movie to be this good. However, Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Things is great. The film, starring Chris Pine and Michelle Rodriguez, uses the role-playing game as a blueprint for a fantastical adventure movie abounding with heart and hilarity. Modern Hollywood is defined by franchises, and Honor Among Thieves could have been a lifeless movie intending solely to cash in on the game’s name recognition.

Instead, directors John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein, along with the rest of the cast and crew, created a breath of fresh air of a movie. The movie’s plot and stakes aren’t breaking any genre trends, but Honor Among Thieves is a raucous good time. Oh, and you can’t forget that this movie has by far the best cameo seen in years.

4. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3

The Guardians step into battle in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.
Disney

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is a bittersweet thing. On one hand, it’s a funny yet heart-tugging story outfitted with all sorts of classic Guardians antics. On the other hand, it’s a touching farewell to a team — and a director — that Marvel fans have come to love. The Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy is the best in the MCU, thanks in large part to James Gun’s direction.

With Vol. 3, Gunn takes us to the heart of Rocket Raccoon and creates a truly horrifying yet lovely story about family and friendship. The action, too, is at the top of the MCU; the hallway scene is one of the greatest action sequences in any Marvel movie. Despite the tumultuous current state of the MCU, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 shines.

3. John Wick: Chapter 4

John shooting someone with the "dragon's breath" in "John Wick: Chapter 4."
Lionsgate

Expectations were through the roof for director Chad Stahelski’s fourth installment to the beloved John Wick series. After all, how do you top ninjas on motorcycles? Well, Stahelski and Keanu Reeves never fail to satisfy. John Wick: Chapter 4 is an epic movie, a nearly three-hour barrage of some of the craziest action put on the big screen.

With such a long runtime, it’s impressive that Stahelski is largely able to hold his audience. There are moments that feel repetitive, yes, but the movie is saved by the hard-to-describe absurdity of the action. There is a flaming shotgun. There is Donnie Yen slicing people up. There is a sequence in which Reeves fights up — and falls down — the longest staircase you’ll ever see. John Wick: Chapter 4 is beautiful in a way that only the sickest action fans will understand.

2. Godzilla Minus One

Godzilla strikes an impressive pose in Godzilla Minus One.
Toho

One of the biggest surprises of the year, Godzilla Minus One serves as a wonderful cap on the year’s action movies. Released just a few weeks ago, the Japanese monster flick from director Takashi Yamazaki puts other big-budget action blockbusters to shame. The movie, which reportedly had a budget of around $15 million, is an awe-inducing wonder of filmmaking.

It follows Koichi Shikishima, a Japanese kamikaze pilot who faked a mechanical problem to save his life in the waning days of World War II. Just as Shikishima — and the rest of the nation — have finally started to recover from the war’s destruction, a new threat emerges from the sea: Godzilla. The movie is as gigantic as the monster itself, a tender drama about war and Japanese identity interspersed with some of the greatest monster movie filmmaking you’ve ever seen. Godzilla has rarely been better.

1. Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One

Hayley Atwell and Tom Cruise hang precariously in a train car in Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One.
Paramount Pictures / Paramount Pictures

No movie suffered from a worse release schedule this year than Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One. The seventh installment in the Mission: Impossible series was released just one week before Barbie and Oppenheimer took the world by storm, so its box office numbers were severely impacted.

Nevertheless, Dead Reckoning Part One has gone largely unappreciated for its signature antics, unrelenting pace, and incredible action set pieces. There are so many moments in the movie that call for one’s jaw to drop, whether it be the high-intensity stunts or tensely constructed spy sequences. Every ounce of Dead Reckoning Part One breathes of epic filmmaking. Tom Cruise is one of the greatest stars Hollywood has today, and he continues to prove his excellence year after year.

Tue, 26 Dec 2023 01:00:00 -0600 en-US text/html https://blogs.timesofisrael.com/calling-ourselves-to-action/ Reacher is the best action show out right now. Here’s why

REACHER Season 2 - Official Trailer | Prime Video

Reacher is back, and he’s more badass than ever. Alan Ritchson returns for a second round of action and mystery-solving in season 2 of Prime Video’s hit Reacher, based on Lee Child’s Jack Reacher book series. The actor plays the titular character, a self-proclaimed hobo and former military policeman whose terrifying abilities make him the worst nightmare for anyone stupid enough to cross him.

A surprising hit with its first season, Reacher received acclaim from critics, cementing itself as one of the best original series on Amazon Prime. Season 2 takes everything that worked about its predecessor and improves upon it while maintaining the same gritty, outright cathartic approach that first made it successful. Once again, the plot juggles past and present; in the past, the show follows Reacher’s time in the army with his squad, the 110th MP Special Investigations Unit. In the present, Reacher receives a message about a string of deaths from several members of his squad. Reuniting with the survivors, he sets out to find the culprits and punish them like only he knows how.

Benefitting from Ritchson’s terrific performance, Reacher season 2 is bigger and better, proving that it is the best action show on television and the perfect antidote to the joyful and inescapable cheer of the Christmas season. Here’s why.

If it ain’t broke…

Alan Ritchson as Jack Reacher from the Amazon Prime Video series Reacher standing outside, looking menacing.
Image via Amazon Prime Video

Season 1 of Reacher succeeded largely because it was a well-told, well-crafted, contained season of television. It was thrilling enough to surprise yet cerebral enough to keep audiences guessing; the general story might’ve been predictable, but the intricacies were not. This approach felt so simplistic that it was refreshing. In an age when film and television feel the need to be as bombastic as possible, there’s something truly amazing about a show that sticks to the basics.

Reacher doesn’t reinvent the genre; on the contrary, it embraces it. Nearly every cliché is present, from the sassy, by-the-book cop – a scene-stealing Domenick Lombardozzi – to the cartoonish-yet-unbelievably-hateable villain – the always-reliable Robert Patrick. Quotes are repeated ad nauseam – remember, in an investigation, details matter – and character traits are milked until they’re dry. Much like the titular hero, the show takes major plot points and beats you over the head with them. Yet, therein lies its allure. There’s a welcome familiarity to Reacher that makes it enjoyable – comforting even. That is until the titular big guy unexpectedly breaks someone’s leg or chokes someone to death.

Meet The Characters | REACHER Season 2 | Prime Video

The last few years have been amazing for the action genre, and Reacher is a worthy addition to the ever-increasing canon of brutal and endlessly entertaining crime capers. The show excels because it features a near-perfect balance of compelling, fast-moving, and surprising mystery and gritty, no-nonsense thrills. There’s a much-appreciated naturalism to Reacher‘s action sequences that makes them feel more grounded than, say, stuff like the boundary-pushing Mission: Impossible or the violently stylish John Wick. Reacher is a beast, yes, but for all his strengths, he’s very much fallible. For example, he hits like a truck but runs like a tractor – there’s even a joke about it.

Reacher‘s action is also highly effective. After all, nothing is quite as satisfying as seeing bad guys suffer for their crimes, and this show knows it. It maximizes each punishment without making it overly graphic. Don’t get me wrong, season 2 is louder and bloodier than season 1, but the violence never becomes excessive or nauseating. Reacher‘s action walks a fine line, showing just enough to have viewers cheering at the bad guy’s demise without making them want to turn away from the screen.

Reacher has friends!

Shaun Sipos, Serinda Swan, Alan Ritchson, and Maria Sten as O'Donnell, Dixon, Reacher, and Neagley looking at a photo spread over a car hood in Reacher season 2.

Last time, Reacher solved the Margrave mystery with the help of young Sergeant Roscoe Conklin and uptight Chief Detective Oscar Finlay. The three made for an odd group, their dynamic relying on their opposing personalities struggling to work together. It was great and largely the reason behind season 1’s unforeseen charm. However, season 2 skips the bonding stage and gets right to it, bringing Reacher’s old army buddies into the equation.

Frances Neagley is back in a larger role, along with Karla Dixon and David O’Donnell, two former members of the 100th who are loyal to Reacher. Unlike Roscoe and Finlay, who often expressed confusion and occasional shock at Reacher’s methods, Neagley, Dixon, and O’Donnell are well acquainted with them. This allows season 2 to jump straight into the action, forsaking any need for introductions or set-ups.

Reacher Season 2 - “You Look Road Worn” New Clips & Trailer (2023)

More importantly, Neagley, Dixon, and O’Donnell’s presence means Reacher now has some pretty spectacular group sequences. Reacher still shines, but his three companions are as capable as he is, each getting the chance to claim the spotlight with their enviable fighting moves. Season 2 finds Reacher experimenting with more stylish fight choreography –  a particularly striking sequence involves the group going against a biker gang. Still, the action remains astonishing and brutal; a bashed skull is a bashed skull, and Reacher bashes a ton of them.

The big guy is here to stay

Alan Ritschon as Jack Reacher turning back and looking suspicious at something off-camera in Prime Video's Reacher.
Image via Amazon Prime Video

Without a doubt, Reacher is the best action show on television right now, an old-school crime thriller that packs quite a punch. Amazon Prime has several great action movies and even a few worthy shows – looking at you, Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan. However, none compares to Reacher, a show that understands the power of straightforward, unpretentious, satisfying storytelling.

Prime Video understands this, as it has already renewed Reacher for a third season. Who can blame them? Between ReacherJack RyanThe Terminal List, and Citadel, the streamer is slowly building itself as the ultimate destination for “dad content.” Reacher is the best of those shows, though, and it’s not even close. Prime Video doesn’t have to worry about running out of content either, as the Jack Reacher series includes a whopping 26 books to draw from. So, fans of Reacher can celebrate, as there seems to be Jack Reacher for a while, and honestly, the action genre is better because of it.

Reacher season 2 is now streaming on Amazon Prime Video.

Moneycontrol Pro Panorama | RBI action to decide market trend

December 06, 2023 / 03:15 PM IST

Dear Reader,

The Panorama newsletter is sent to Moneycontrol Pro subscribers on market days. It offers easy access to stories published on Moneycontrol Pro and gives a little extra by setting out a context or an event or trend that investors should keep track of.

Story continues below Advertisement

A 2200-point gain in the Sensex, a 700-point jump in the Nifty, and a 2400-point run-up in the Bank Nifty in three days reflect one of the sharpest moves seen in the market recently. It is rare to see the market react this swiftly to state elections.

Several factors have caused a rapid shift in a short period. The elections’ results are viewed as a precursor to the 2024 general election’s outcome. The results signify a vote of confidence in the current government at the Centre and its growth agenda. Crucially, they are perceived as a rejection of the politics of offering freebies, which has adversely affected the finances of states where governments were elected on the pledge of providing free power, food, or monthly handouts.

Besides politics, the equity market was also under-owned as many traders had exited their positions ahead of election results. The results also saw the return of foreign investors in the cash market. Short-covering was another reason for the frenetic buying seen.

The question now is whether the rally is over or has some steam left. All technical indicators and oscillators indicate the market is in the overbought territory. However, structurally, there is still some room for upward movement.

Buying by foreign traders has just reached the average mark while the client-wise position has shown that traders have booked profit as the market moved higher. Proprietary traders’ data also show booking of long positions after the election result.

The market movement on Wednesday suggests that the market will pause for a while. The next reason for either a rise or fall will be the credit policy meeting. The Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) meeting started today, and the RBI Governor, Shaktikanta Das, will unveil the decision of the six-member MPC on December 8 (Friday). Markets are likely to pause till the next trigger gives them a reason to move. It’s not going to be an easy decision to make, writes my colleague Aparna Iyer, so do read her take to know what to expect.

'Career cushioning,' latest workplace trend, has employees trying to protect themselves heading into 2024

The unpredictability of the state of the American workplace continues to be on the minds of employees as the New Year of 2024 beckons.

The response to this instability of job security has created a workplace trend known as "career cushioning."

Workers are setting up Plan B initiatives — so that if they should be downsized by their companies, they're prepared for it.

NEW ‘COFFEE BADGING’ JOB TREND HAS SOME BUSINESS LEADERS ON HIGH ALERT

Here's more on this emerging trend.

What exactly is career cushioning?

Career cushioning is a strategy in which employees add security to their careers by taking proactive steps like attending networking nights, updating their resumes and LinkedIn profiles, and perhaps even applying for jobs.

"Late-career professionals may focus on career cushioning to ensure a smooth transition into retirement or to pursue encore careers, emphasizing stability and financial security," said one hiring expert.  (iStock / iStock)

That's according to Taylor Queen, HR adviser with Insperity in Orlando, Florida.

"Although ‘career cushioners’ may not want to leave their current position, they decide to get a jumpstart in case their role should change or be eliminated," he said.

Why is this trending?

Though the labor market is tight, some metrics like the LinkedIn Confidence Index showed that less than half of employees said they were prepared for an economic downturn in October 2022.

YOU'VE JUST GOTTEN FIRED. HERE'S HOW TO FORGIVE YOURSELF AND MOVE ON

"Even if the economic outlook has improved since then, workers might be motivated by the talk of a recession to career cushion," noted Queen.

The frequency of career cushioning is also dependent on the industry, as some sectors have become more prone to layoffs, he added.

Why do employees create backup career opportunities?

Those who are worried about their jobs are being proactive, say experts.

The frequency of career cushioning is also dependent on the industry, as some sectors have become more prone to layoffs, said one expert.  (iStock / iStock)

"Being proactive, especially for those in more competitive industries, can lessen the downtime between positions if they are laid off or their position is eliminated," continued Queen.

Actions like attending networking events and keeping a fresh resume are always good lifestyle strategies, even for those who feel secure in their roles.

"If the networking efforts lead to an interview, some may decide to make the career leap prior to any layoff announcements made by their organization," he said.

Is this trend more prevalent with late-career employees?

Joe Galvin, chief research officer with Vistage in Stamford, Connecticut, told FOX Business that career cushioning can happen at any point in an employee’s career and is not exclusive to a specific age group.

While it's challenging to generalize, certain trends and considerations may be observed across age demographics, he said.

"For example, younger professionals may be more inclined to engage in career cushioning as they explore various industries, job roles and skill development opportunities," said Galvin.

‘Career cushioning,’ latest workplace trend, has employees trying to protect themselves heading into 2024

The unpredictability of the state of the American workplace continues to be on the minds of employees as the New Year of 2024 beckons.

The response to this instability of job security has created a workplace trend known as “career cushioning.”

Workers are setting up Plan B initiatives — so that if they should be downsized by their companies, they’re prepared for it.

Here’s more on this emerging trend.

What exactly is career cushioning?

Career cushioning is a strategy in which employees add security to their careers by taking proactive steps like attending networking nights, updating their resumes and LinkedIn profiles, and perhaps even applying for jobs.

That’s according to Taylor Queen, HR adviser with Insperity in Orlando, Florida.

“Although ‘career cushioners’ may not want to leave their current position, they decide to get a jumpstart in case their role should change or be eliminated,” he said.

Why is this trending?

Though the labor market is tight, some metrics like the LinkedIn Confidence Index showed that less than half of employees said they were prepared for an economic downturn in October 2022.

“Even if the economic outlook has improved since then, workers might be motivated by the talk of a recession to career cushion,” noted Queen.

The frequency of career cushioning is also dependent on the industry, as some sectors have become more prone to layoffs, he added.

Why do employees create backup career opportunities?

Those who are worried about their jobs are being proactive, say experts.

“Being proactive, especially for those in more competitive industries, can lessen the downtime between positions if they are laid off or their position is eliminated,” continued Queen.

Actions like attending networking events and keeping a fresh resume are always good lifestyle strategies, even for those who feel secure in their roles.

“Late-career professionals may focus on career cushioning to ensure a smooth transition into retirement or to pursue encore careers, emphasizing stability and financial security,” said one hiring expert. Shutterstock
